Battery — 3.0
The battery life of Huawei Honor 5X is quite high for its price, but we cannot call it outstanding; the same Honor 6 with similar characteristics lasted longer.
So, the phone lasted 7 hours 30 minutes when playing HD video at maximum brightness — a relatively long time. This is 20 minutes less than the Honor 7, but slightly longer than the Huawei Nexus 6P phablet. The operating time when playing music was already average — 51 hours, comparable to the small Samsung Galaxy A3.
During an hour of running the GeekBench Battery Test benchmark, the smartphone consumed 16% of the charge, an average result. In an hour of racing in Asphalt 8, the battery was drained by 24% — again a typical result, promising about 4 hours of work in games. In daily use, the phone easily lasted us for about a day and a half, and with active use, for a full day.
In the settings of Honor 5X you can find several power consumption modes — “Normal”, “Smart” and “Energy Saving”. The second offers automatic adjustment of energy consumption, and the latter turns the smartphone into a black and white “dialer” with SMS messages. The included 1A adapter charges the smartphone in about three hours, which is quite a long time. That’s why we didn’t have enough fast charging function, but for that kind of money it’s more likely just our “wants”.
Dimensions and design — 3.9
Huawei Honor 5X is quite compact for its large screen. Its dimensions are 151.3 x 76.3 x 8.6 mm and its weight is 158 grams. It’s slightly shorter and wider than the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium, but noticeably smaller than the iPhone 6S Plus. It is not that heavy for its diagonal size, only slightly heavier than the 5.2-inch Samsung Galaxy A5 (2020). Comparison with its classmate in terms of price, Zenfone 2 Laser ZE550KL, is in favor of the Honor 5X on all counts.
The smartphone body is wide, but fits quite comfortably in a large palm. True, using it with one hand is inconvenient even with the help of the special “One-handed control” mode. With it, the image is compressed to the size of a 4-inch screen, which looks very strange.
From the front, the smartphone looks rather faceless, and from the back it resembles Huawei Honor 7. It is distinguished from the same Honor 4X by the absence of separate buttons on the front surface of the body; they are implemented higher, on the touch panel of the display. The frames look thinner due to a technique used in the Honor 4C — a small area around the screen is painted black, and when the phone is turned off, it merges with the dark surface of the display.
The rear panel of Honor 5X can be called memorable. In gold it looks like the back of an expensive device — the textured metal looks good. There is a fast fingerprint scanner under the camera lens. The transition from the back panel to the side ends was made unusual — it is not smooth, but chopped, due to this an additional narrow edge appears along the edges of the back.
Even the control keys on the side were made textured and pleasant to the touch. But what we found strange were the plastic inserts for the antennas at the top and bottom edges of the backrest — with their dotted texture, they look like flesh-colored plaster. Moreover, it is not clear why the lens was made to protrude from the body.
The build quality is high — the phone is built well, does not creak under pressure and does not want to bend. Some people may not like the fact that the phone body is non-separable, but that’s the price to pay for metal. During the tests, Honor 5X almost did not lose its presentation, although the back collects dirt and fingerprints at a moderate speed.
Huawei Honor 5X can be purchased in three colors — gold, graphite gray and metallic silver.
Internet — 5.0
The Huawei Honor 5X comes with a proprietary “Browser” and Chrome pre-installed. The first one turned out to be quite interesting — in it you can save pages for offline reading, use an advertising filter, block pop-ups, or disable all images to save traffic. Chrome is already quite well known and is usually pre-installed on most Android devices. It works quickly and can sync with your desktop browser to display bookmarks and history.
Communications — 2.6
We decided to save money on communications in the Honor 5X; we can only highlight LTE support. Otherwise, his set is quite ordinary:
- Wi-Fi b/g/n with the ability to share the Internet
- Bluetooth 4.1 with A2DP profile support
- LTE Cat. 4, up to 150/50 Mbit/s
- A-GPS with GLONASS support
- FM radio (only works with headphones).
The “above average” level lacks dual-band or fast Wi-Fi, an NFC chip and other features, such as the IR port that the Honor 7 has. The Micro-USB connector here is simple, without OTG for connecting devices. The only noteworthy thing is the support for two SIM cards of different formats — Nano and Micro.
Competitors
The price for Huawei Honor 5X as of March 2020 is 17,000 rubles. With its characteristics and price, let’s name Huawei Honor 4X and Asus Zenfone 2 ZE551ML as competitors.
Huawei Honor 4X can be called the predecessor of the 5X — today this 5.5-inch smartphone costs on average 3.5 thousand rubles cheaper, but also offers more modest specifications. Its plastic body is larger and heavier, it does not have a fingerprint sensor, it also uses an older chipset and a less clear screen, and the Honor 4X sits a little faster. In terms of cameras, communications, OS and interface, the devices can be said to have parity.
Asus Zenfone 2 ZE551ML is a budget flagship from the Koreans, the version with 16 GB of memory costs on average one to two thousand rubles more. It stands out for its design and the location of the button on the back, higher performance and the availability of modifications to 32, 64 GB of internal and 4 GB of RAM.

The golden-colored Honor 5X smartphone looks like a precious bar of gold — diamond polishing of the case, as well as sandblasting of the edges, make it literally sparkle, like a diamond in a frame.
The internal “stuffing” of the smartphone also amazes with its functionality and performance, for which, by the way, the eight-core processor is responsible. The full-HD screen coupled with a powerful graphics processor will provide you with an incredible experience when running 3D games — you will be surprised how realistic the game can be.
Honor 5X provides expansion of internal memory with an additional memory card. In addition, you can connect two SIM cards at once in order to get even more communication and choose the tariffs you need.

The gray Honor 5X smartphone in a thin metal case and with a comfortable ergonomic shape will certainly appeal to true connoisseurs of multifunctional smartphones for its appearance, internal “filling” and the high degree of security provided.
The durable body, made of aircraft-grade aluminum, can serve you for a long time without unpleasant breakdowns or disruptions in functionality. Diamond polishing of the body itself and sandblasting of the edges make it even safer and more reliable in operation.
You will definitely like the Honor 5X security system, which is carried out using a fingerprint scanner. The scanner will detect your fingerprint in 0.5 seconds, so you can get to work even faster. The scanner has a special coating that protects it from scratches and other damage.
Multimedia — 2.6
Huawei Honor 5X supports only the most common audio and video codecs and does not stand out for its high sound quality. So, it played music in FLAC, but could not cope with the AC-3 format. In terms of video, it turned out to be not at all omnivorous — problems arose both with RMVB, TS, FLV, and with some MKV videos.
The smartphone comes pre-installed with a fairly simple and nicely designed audio player. Sound settings include bass boost, 3D effect and an equalizer with a set of presets and manual settings. However, they are only available when headphones are connected. If you listen to music on headphones, the sound quality is average, but through its own speaker the smartphone sounds mediocre.
The built-in video player is also quite simple. In it you can adjust the playback speed, sound volume (although there are also keys on the body for this), lock the image (so that it does not collapse from an accidental touch) or play a video in a small window on top of the desktop.
Features
Huawei Honor 5X can be called special — it has a metal body, a fingerprint scanner and a fairly capacious battery. But the most unusual thing is the combination of a low price and high-quality characteristics, at a level above average.
It’s worth mentioning separately about the scanner — unlocking with a finger occurs in about half a second, and the sensor recognizes a fragment of a finger from any angle. The only problem: you’ll only be given 6 attempts to create a small area on any of your fingers, and that’s not that much. Therefore, think in advance exactly how it will be more convenient for you to use it.
In addition, LTE support and three separate slots for NanoSIM, MicroSIM and MicroSD cards can be called distinctive. The smartphone runs Android 5.1 Lollipop OS and the proprietary EM UI 3.1 interface. Huawei promises to update the phone to Android 6 Marshmallow, but when this will happen is still unclear.
The proprietary interface of the device has a large number of different functions and capabilities, but you will have to spend some time studying them. There are really a lot of interesting features here — gesture control, shaking, even a fingerprint scanner, you can not only unlock your smartphone, but also take photos, answer an incoming call, and so on.
Memory — 4.0
The volume of built-in memory of Huawei Honor 5X is 16 GB, of which about 10.5 GB is available to the user — the rest is occupied by pre-installed software and the system. In practice, this is not so much, but this volume can be expanded using a memory card of up to 128 GB. By the way, a separate slot is used for it, that is, SIM cards do not apply for additional storage space. Most games and large applications can be moved from the main memory to MicroSD, but many of the pre-installed ones cannot be deleted.
Productivity — 2.6
Huawei Honor 5X can be called powerful enough for most phone tasks, it is not suitable only for the heaviest games.
The smartphone is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 processor (4 cores at up to 1.2 GHz, 4 cores at 1.5 GHz). The amount of RAM is 2 GB, which can be called standard for a mid-range phone. In daily use, the Honor 5X works quite smoothly, but not perfectly fast — sometimes when switching between modes, applications or different menus, the device hesitates for a while.
But this will be more noticeable for those who are accustomed to top-end devices. Most games launch and run without problems. Only the most severe of them cause noticeable (to the eye) problems. Thus, NOVA 3 noticeably slows down, and Asphalt 8 “jerks” at high graphics. On medium settings it becomes playable, but still lags from time to time.
If we consider synthetic tests, then Honor 5X shows above average results:
- in GeekBench 3 (processor performance) — 3045 points (only half a thousand inferior to Huawei Honor 7)
- in AnTuTu 6.0 (mixed test) — 35658 (5000 higher than Huawei Honor 4X)
- in 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited (graphics test) — up to 7963 (comparable to Lenovo Vibe Shot
).
Working with text — 5.0
You can choose two keyboards on your smartphone: the standard one from Google and Huawei’s own Swype.
You’re probably familiar with the first one, it can quickly switch between languages and supports continuous word input (Swype). The Huawei Swype keyboard has both a function of the same name, as well as the marking of additional characters and even gesture control (for example, you can hide the keyboard from the screen with a sliding motion). The only thing that seems inconvenient is switching between languages in two steps — holding down the spacebar and swiping up.

Screen — 4.8
Huawei Honor 5X screen is good for its price. Large, bright, with Full HD resolution — finding such a display for an average price tag is not an easy task. Its shortcomings — high color temperature and simple protective glass — can be called uncritical.
As mentioned above, the phone’s screen has Full HD resolution (1920×1080 pixels). For a 5.5-inch diagonal, the pixel density is very high at 401 per inch, which is enough to make images look sharp. Instead of the fashionable Gorilla Glass, a simpler one from ASG is used, installed on top of the display. It is barely noticeable to the eye and moderately collects fingerprints, which can then be wiped off relatively easily.
Viewing angles of the Honor 5X are good for an IPS panel. When the display is tilted, the colors remain as they are, only the image contrast suffers. The brightness range was a pleasant surprise — from 6 to 532 cd/m2, better than that of the more expensive Huawei Honor 7. On a sunny day, such a screen is readable with almost no problems, and at night it does not blind the eyes at low brightness.
The display supports an auto-brightness function (with smooth adjustment using a slider), it works quickly, but sometimes it is not adequate for lighting conditions. The image contrast is 760:1, an average result for an IPS matrix, it is only slightly higher than that of the budget ZTE Blade X5. The color gamut covers 93% of the standard, sometimes “falling” beyond its limits.
We also liked the glove mode and how it worked. The screen becomes quite responsive, you can even launch specific applications and type text on the keyboard.
