Huawei continues to update the software of its mobile devices. In June, an update to the proprietary Emotion UI (EMUI) and Magic UI shells was presented for many Huawei smartphones. EMUI 10 and EMUI 10.1 update for June 2020 according to the official schedule of Huawei received a total of 8 smartphones in the global market. Owners of previous generations of flagship Huawei smartphones, which include Huawei Mate 10, Huawei Mate 10 Pro, Huawei P20, Huawei P20 Pro, based on the eight-core HiSilicon Kirin 970 chip, received the long-awaited EMUI update to version 10 with many new features.

The latest version of the EMUI 10.1 shell has become available for many Huawei smartphones of the Mate 30 and Mate 20 series, Nova 5 and Nova 6. Huawei Honor 9X and 9X Pro smartphones recently received a stable version of EMUI 10.1, the distribution of which is only gaining momentum in Asia. Honor smartphones of previous generations, Honor 20, Honor V30, V20, Magic 2 and others also receive an update to EMUI to version 10.1 and Magic UI to version 3.1. The company does not forget about tablets; EMUI 10.1 was received by devices from the MediaPad M6 line and the MatePad Pro tablet.

Online update.

Mandatory conditions.

● Before starting the update, your smartphone must be connected to the Internet. Online updates consume a certain amount of data, so it is recommended to connect your smartphone to a Wi-Fi network.

● The battery must be charged more than 30%.

● It will take some time to update. Do not press the power button or perform any operations during the update. When the update is complete, the smartphone will reboot automatically.

Update procedure.

Tap Settings > Updates to check for new updates. If a new update is found, tap it to download it, then follow the onscreen instructions to update your smartphone.

Appearance

Appearance and design are undoubtedly the advantages of the Huawei Y6 smartphone. The thin and light body fits comfortably in the hand. All corners are rounded.

The back panel is made of glossy plastic with a varnish effect. The solution is beautiful – shine and reflection, but without a cover it gets dirty quickly.

In the top center there is a round recess for the fingerprint scanner, on the left edge there is a protrusion with the main camera lens, and under it there is an LED flash.

The camera implementation is not up to par with a modern device; even budget models are increasingly using a dual camera and higher resolution.

The front panel is completely covered with tempered glass with a 2.5D effect. There is a narrow plastic edging.

In the upper part in the center there is a drop-shaped cutout for the front camera lens. Above it there is a narrow cutout for the earpiece, and there is also a light indicator.

At the bottom there is a strip with a shiny Huawei logo, except for it, the rest of the side frames are very thin.

Hidden under the glass are light and proximity sensors, as well as a front flash with a tinted effect.

All other elements are located at the ends of the device. At the bottom center there is a microUSB connector and speaker grilles.

On top there is a 3.5 mm jack and a microphone hole.

On the right side there is a volume rocker and a lock button.

On the left side there is a tray for two nano SIM cards and a memory card.

Design, materials, assembly

We won’t find anything extraordinary in the appearance of the Y6p. Typical design of a budget smartphone in 2020. The main thing that manufacturers continue to attract potential buyers in this segment with is multi-colored back covers with iridescence. But since color solutions are essentially exhausted, they are trying to interest us in different patterns of reflections and overflows.

As for the materials – plastic everywhere except the front part – here they used protective glass of an unknown brand. The frame is coated in the same color as the smartphone, but it is not glossy, but matte, it looks nice and no fingerprints are visible on it. The back is also plastic, it will probably be actively covered with scratches. And collects fingerprints, of course.

I tested Huawei Y6p in green. There are also purple and black options.

The build of the smartphone is excellent, traditionally for Huawei, there is not even a hint of complaints here at all.

Interface

The smartphone has a proprietary EMUI 9.0 shell developed for Android 9 Pie. Updating is possible over the air. Holding your finger on the screen for a long time launches an additional settings menu: widgets, navigation options, etc.

The lock screen has additional functions; thanks to multi-directional swipes, you can not only go to the desktop, but also launch a panel with “quick applications”, turn on the camera, change the wallpaper of the lock screen. Unlocking is possible using a fingerprint and facial recognition, the latter function is activated by tilting the smartphone. There is a funny animation of the charging process.

A swipe from the top opens the notification curtain, the settings icons are presented in short and full form, you can add icons of your choice.

There are quite a lot of interface settings, as well as built-in features – voice control, voice assistant like Alice, motion control, vision protection. In desktop mode, you can change the navigation system: the usual three touch buttons, or gestures.

Screen video recording is possible.

Cameras

First of all, it is worth noting that the Huawei Y6p camera software does not have fancy artificial intelligence support. Probably because the smartphone uses a budget MTK chip instead of the proprietary Huawei Kirin. Whether this is good or bad, I can’t say for sure. On the one hand, AI often helps pull out complex scenes.

Now about the cameras themselves. It seems like nothing special if you look at the raw numbers. The main one consists of three modules – a main 13 MP wide sensor with a good aperture value of f/1.8, an ultra-wide module (120˚) 5 MP, f/2.2, and a depth sensor 2 MP f/2.4.

Suddenly, a smartphone camera can become a pleasant surprise for the buyer. Personally, she surprised me. The main module is definitely good. Naturally – within the limits of class and price. In good lighting you can get great photos. And even in low light conditions, the camera behaves more than decently – the detail is good, especially at close and short distances, there is practically no noise.

At the same time, the module demonstrates natural color reproduction and good dynamic range. As I already said, there is no AI support here, and the HDR mode is placed in a separate additional menu and cannot be activated directly from the shooting screen. But it seems to me that the camera uses it automatically.

When you point the viewfinder at objects in scenes with bright light and shadows, you see the exposure in the focusing area, respectively – a dark or overexposed picture. But if you take a photo and look at it later in the gallery, then, oh magic, it turns out that the photo looks quite good, both in the light areas and in the shadows. Cool!

The camera software seems simple, but it turns out that the algorithms are not so “stupid”. And all this happens automatically, without requiring any additional actions from the user. The only thing is that photos are not saved quickly and open in the gallery in almost half a second. But this, of course, is the fault of not very productive hardware.

There is simply no separate night mode in the camera interface. Night photos are weak in terms of detail in the shadows. Of course, compared to flagships. And in their class they are not bad. Overall, the Y6p probably has one of the best cameras in the price segment under $150.

Ultra-wide – normal for its class. Well, that is, it just exists and you can capture a wider scene. But the detail, naturally, is noticeably lower than that of the main module. This is especially noticeable in low light. But again, for the price it’s quite OK.

The depth module ensures that the “Aperture” mode works, that is, it helps blur the background. It works quite successfully. The object is cropped clearly, and the degree of bokeh effect can be adjusted. In general, it is not installed for show.

Regarding video shooting, I also can’t say anything directly bad, except that, of course, there is no stabilization. The videos are shot in 1080p and 30 fps, which is standard for the budget segment of smartphones. In general, the quality is quite acceptable if you have a steady hand and enough light.

The front camera in the Y6p is also not bad, it is completely enough for video calling and selfies of decent quality. There is a customizable “Beauty” mode that works for the front camera too – it will make your face smooth and remove imperfections. But background blur, unfortunately, for obvious reasons, is not supported by the front camera, so there is no normal portrait mode provided here.

Huawei Y6p camera software is the same as in other brand smartphones, but with significant simplifications. Many modes that are found in more expensive devices are missing. Panorama, HDR and a meager pro mode are hidden in the “more” menu. From the shooting screen, you can only turn on the flash and go to settings, which are not very diverse.

For some reason, there is an option to select the frame rate for shooting video, but there is only one option – 30 fps. But the very presence of the item suggests that perhaps something will change soon with subsequent updates and we will get an increase in resolution or frame rate.

Communications

In this regard, everything is also standard. Wi-Fi module 802.11b/g/n – single-band, 2.4 GHz only. Bluetooth 5.0 – which is nice. And suddenly – NFC support!

But it’s too early to rejoice for fans of contactless mobile payments. At least in Ukraine, Huawei and Honor smartphones without Google services do not currently support this function. But the company’s regional office says that such an opportunity will appear very soon.

As usual, I want to criticize the manufacturer for the microUSB port. Not out of harm, it’s just high time to install USB-C everywhere, stop mocking users. Therefore, I give a minus to everyone who uses an outdated connector in any devices.

The geopositioning module is characterized by support for GPS, AGPS, GLONASS, BeiDou networks. No problems were noticed in his work.

Another interesting feature of Huawei Y6p is the presence of FM radio, which works without connecting headphones, that is, it uses an internal antenna. But if you connect headphones, the signal will become more stable.

Huawei Y6p went on sale at the end of May 2020 at an estimated cost of 3,800 UAH (approximately $140). And to be honest, at first it may seem that for this price it has enough real competitors. These are, of course, Redmi 8 and 8A, as well as other first-tier Chinese, like OPPO A31, Realme 3 and C3, Vivo Y11 and U3X.

But even just comparing the characteristics and equipment, it becomes clear that the cost of the new Huawei product was chosen very wisely. Because the Y6p for the same price either has more powerful hardware, or a more capacious battery, or more permanent memory. Although, if you add another 200-300 UAH, then you can already find options that are more worthy in my opinion.

Performance and testing

The Huawei Y6 smartphone is built on a 64-bit MediaTek Helio A22 MT6761 chipset created using a 12nm process technology. Four cores operate at 2 GHz. The chipset is relatively new, created in mid-2020 specifically for budget solutions. Supports artificial intelligence, can monitor operating efficiency, protects against overheating, and is energy efficient. It is this that limits the capabilities of the smartphone – the maximum supported camera resolution is 13 8 MP, the screen is 1600×720.

Only 2 GB of RAM is the minimum that is required for normal operation of the OS. Devices with 1 GB of memory noticeably “slow down” in such conditions. But the built-in memory is a respectable 32 GB, but approximately 25 GB is available to the user.

The same utility will conduct a comprehensive performance assessment. The AnTuTu Benchmark v7.1.7 test scores 64634 points. The HTML5 test shows 14065 points.

The GPS module showed excellent sensitivity – a cold start takes 10-15 seconds. Even indoors, it quickly finds dozens of satellites and determines the location with an accuracy of 2-3 meters. GPS/AGPS, GLONASS, BDS supported.

The 4G and 3G connection is stable, no problems have been identified, the earpiece is loud enough, transmits sound clearly, without distortion. The microphone is sensitive, the interlocutor hears speech clearly. When installing two SIM cards, one of them must be selected to connect to the mobile Internet.

Wi-Fi holds the signal perfectly even far from the router, the speed does not suffer.

I was especially pleased with the volume of the external speaker; the smartphone can be used as a portable speaker. The sound is quite decent, without distortion, there is even some semblance of low frequencies. F M radio works without connecting external headphones; they usually serve as an antenna on smartphones.

Firmware and software

Actually, the key thesis is this: Huawei Y6p is an AG smartphone. That is, it runs Android 10 and EMUI 10.1.0 with support for Huawei Mobile Services and the installed Huawei AppGallery application store (hence the term AG). There are no pre-installed Google services in the system, as well as the Google Play store.

How to live with this? It turns out that it is quite simple if you are ready to switch to using alternative services. Of which, as it turned out, there are countless numbers and often they are even better than analogues from the “good corporation”. You don’t have to say goodbye to Google completely; some services can be used through a browser or third-party applications.

You can even install some Google applications on this smartphone from alternative sources (for example, the APKPure store) – the same maps work, build routes, but you cannot save points, the gboard keyboard works, but some functions, like dictionary synchronization, will not function.

Typical IPS (PLS), typical for Huawei budget phones. Of course, when moving from the flagship OLED, it seems pale and expressionless. But it is clear that this only happens when directly compared with smartphone screens 5-8 times more expensive.

In reality, the Huawei Y6p has a decent display. And one might even say – excellent. It is 6.3-inch with an aspect ratio of 20:9 and a resolution of 1600×720 pixels (density 278 ppi).

Viewing angles are maximum, contrast is also high. The black color is deep – on the screen it almost completely merges with the black frames. The brightness is decent, although not record-breaking. But outdoors the display remains readable in most cases. In general, the screen is very OK for such a price.

In the display settings there are standard EMUI options for color temperature correction, enabling the eye protection function and hiding the cutout for the camera. But there are also unique features – for example, the e-book mode switches the screen to black and white mode.

Ergonomics

Huawei Y6p is a medium-sized smartphone. Of course, it may seem large to some, but all modern flagships are even larger. I can operate it with one hand almost without any problems and can reach the top edge of the screen with my thumb almost without catching. But I have a large palm and long fingers.

The buttons are in a convenient place, as is always the case in Huawei smartphones – they fall under the thumb if you hold the smartphone in your right hand or under your index/middle finger if you hold it in your left. The fingerprint scanner is also located where it is needed.

The general impression of the smartphone is that it is not slippery! And all thanks to the matte frame. Y6p does not constantly try to slip out of your hands, as is the case with glossy devices. Somehow I don’t even want to put this smartphone in a case. So, if you are not afraid of scratches on the back and/or use your smartphone very carefully, you don’t have to worry about this issue.

Conclusions

Huawei Y6 (2020) is a high-quality entry-level smartphone with an edge-to-edge display. The manufacturer paid increased attention to the security of personal information and an optimized interface. The device is designed for users who want to purchase a budget phone with a beautiful design and advanced features.
