Huawei has introduced the first data center switch on the market designed for the era of artificial intelligence (AI) – CloudEngine 16800. Huawei considers three characteristics of data center switches to be defining for the AI era. A built-in AI processor, a 400GE network card with 48 ports, and the ability to evolve toward autonomous management. The company is incorporating all of these technologies into its data center switches to help customers accelerate the digital transformation out of business.

According to the Huawei Global Industry Vision (GIV) 2025 report, the adoption rate of artificial intelligence technologies will grow to 86% by 2025, up from 16% in 2015.

The ability to effectively use artificial intelligence to change business models, make decisions and improve service quality will be a key driving force.

“The perfect intelligent world is only a short time away. Data centers are becoming the core of new infrastructures such as 5G and AI. Huawei is the first to incorporate artificial intelligence technologies into data center switches, helping to move data center networks from the era of cloud computing to the era of artificial intelligence,” said Kevin Hu, president of Huawei’s Network business.

With the advent of artificial intelligence, its processing power becomes dependent on the performance of data center networks, which becomes a key challenge for commercial adoption of AI technology. Under traditional Ethernet technology, AI computing power in data centers reaches only 50%.

At the same time, annual global data volume is expected to grow from 10 zettabytes in 2018 to 180 zettabytes (180 billion terabytes) in 2025. Existing 100GE data center networks can’t handle that kind of data flow. In addition, traditional non-automated maintenance methods will not keep up with the increasing demands as the number of data center servers continues to grow and networks are interconnected in parallel. Accordingly, it seems necessary to develop and implement new technologies to improve the performance of intelligent maintenance systems.

“A data center switch designed for the era of artificial intelligence has all three key features: it has a built-in AI processor, a 400GE network card with 48 ports, and the ability to evolve to autonomous management,” says Kevin Hu.

CloudEngine 16800, the first data center switch on the market with a built-in high-performance AI processor, uses the revolutionary iLossless algorithm. It provides automatic optimization for traffic patterns. As well as low latency and increased throughput. The CloudEngine 16800 switch overcomes the processing power limitations caused by packet loss in traditional Ethernet, thereby increasing AI processing power from 50 percent to 100 percent and increasing storage input/output operations per second (IOPS) by 30 percent.

The 400GE network card with 48 ports has the highest port density on the market and will help you handle five times the traffic in the age of artificial intelligence.

CloudEngine 16800 is built on an advanced hardware switching platform – thanks to its orthogonal architecture, it avoids traditional technical issues related to high-speed signal transmission, heat dissipation and power supply. In addition, the power consumption per bit is reduced by 50%, resulting in greener operation.

With CloudEngine 16800 local intelligence and the centralized FabricInsight network analyzer, the distributed AI maintenance system detects failures in seconds and automatically identifies their sources. This accelerates network autonomy. In addition, this architecture greatly increases the flexibility of maintenance systems.

“The Huawei CloudEngine series of data center switches have found successful commercial deployment with more than six thousand customers, driving digital transformation in industries such as finance, internet and communications. Huawei is introducing the CloudEngine 16800 switch to accelerate intelligent transformation, achieve pervasive artificial intelligence, and work with customers and partners to create the perfect intelligent communication world,” said Leon Wang, General Manager of Huawei’s Data Center Network Domain business.
