How to enter the engineering menu of Chinese phones

huawei enginer menu

Is it true that the Chinese made the world’s best smartphone processor? kirin 980 review and comparison with competitors (part 1)

Android smartphones have three types of economical cores
:

Cortex-A7
— ancient, 2020 model, no longer found in flagships

Cortex-A53
— the most “popular” economical cores, were released at the end of 2020, but to this day form the basis of most budget processors, and the “half” of some flagship processors.

Cortex-A55
— the latest economical cores. Announced May 2020, 15% more energy efficient and 20-30% faster than Cortex-A53.

And three types of productive cores
:

Cortex-A72
— very fast, very power-hungry, very hot cores of the 2020 model. They appeared in the “off-season”, when some manufacturers (Samsung, Qualcomm) preferred the old Cortex-A57, in a simplified version they made the budget Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro a “superstar”, in the flagship version they became the successful (albeit insatiable) main breakthrough Huawei P9 and Honor 8.

Cortex-A73
— a slightly improved version of the A72 with a lower heating level and a slight increase in performance, the ability to work with the new Mali G71 graphics, and not the “rotten” T880. The basis of all Samsung processor experiments and simply the most popular type of cores in flagship processors in recent years.

Cortex-A75
— the first cores that can be connected not in blocks of 4, but in any quantities and any combinations, even with low-power and other architecturally Cortex-A55. In everyday tasks (the Internet, launching applications and switching between them, opening documents or installing applications) they are slightly different from the Cortex-A73, but they are perfectly “trained” to work together with the camera, “Photoshop” or speech recognition. In a word, to work with artificial intelligence. In the case of the Snapdragon 845, it may have felt revolutionary, but the irony is that the A73 cores in the Snapdragon 835 were too improved for the difference from the 845 to be noticeable.

You can change this action using this code. You can enable direct power on this button, so you don’t have to waste time selecting the option.

Kirin 980 sets the direction for the industry

The production technology of mobile processors directly affects their performance and level of energy consumption. Today, the most common manufacturing process is 10 nm, and the Kirin 980 was the world’s first commercial chip manufactured using the latest 7 nm process developed by TSMC.

Improvements in processor production technology go in parallel with the consistent evolution of chip designs. Physically, a silicon semiconductor can be reduced to 7 nm before electrons begin to flow uncontrollably from one gate to another.

Huawei Kirin 980: на что способен мобильный процессор нового поколения

Huawei developers began basic research into the new 7nm process three years ago. To effectively solve all the problems of mass production, the industry’s best specialists in integrated circuits and system design were assembled. Featuring a heterogeneous converged system architecture and optimized CPU, GPU, NPU, ISP and DDR, Kirin 980 contains 6.9 billion transistors in an area of less than 1 cm2. Powerful CPU, GPU, DDR, smart NPU, high-quality ISP and fast modem provide the processor with high energy efficiency.

To ensure smooth operation under various modes and usage conditions, the first 7nm Kirin 980 chipset went through a variety of tests aimed at verifying performance and power efficiency. A comprehensive check of all components provides the most reliable guarantees of stability and comfort for mobile device users.

Telephony (telephony)

This tab contains items related to the network and mobile communications. For example, you can test the modem, antenna, or select the optimal settings for the CFU. Usually nothing needs to be changed, since everything works correctly from the start.

To change parameters, you need to open the “BandMode” section, and then simply uncheck unused frequencies. Finding out what you need to leave is no more difficult — the official website of your telecom operator will help with this. And if you scroll down the list a little lower, you will see a sub-item designed for working with networks.

And in some, mostly remote corners of the globe, there may be no modern 4G or 5G mobile Internet standard at all. So why waste your smartphone’s resources trying to find a network that doesn’t exist? That’s right, there’s no need. We simply turn off unnecessary networks and see how much the device’s battery life has increased.

In fact, the average user does not need to enter this tab. In this section of the engineering menu there are no settings that can positively affect the performance of the smartphone. But accidentally changing the parameters of wireless modules incorrectly is quite possible.

As for Bluetooth, you can get information about the strength of the current signal, although this data will not be useful to anyone. Yes, there are special points here that can be changed. But you can’t do without special knowledge in the field of signal transmission. You can try to do everything at random, hoping for an improvement in network performance, but this is not the best option.

Entering the engineering menu on android (command and program)

Not many people know about the existence in the Android OS of a menu with advanced device settings — engineering menu

. And someone knows, but doesn’t know how to enter it and what to do with it.
In this article we will show how to enter the engineering menu and some of its capabilities.

You can enter the engineering menu simply by entering a special command (but we must add that this method does not work on all versions of Android and not on all devices)

Command to enter the engineering menu: *#*#3646633#*#*

им

Also on some versions of Android the command may work *#15963#*
and

*#*#4636#*#*

Immediately after entering, the command should disappear and the engineering menu should open. But on some devices
You will also need to press the “Call” key

If this method does not have any result, you can use an alternative!

And it consists of installing the program (which, by the way, is freely available on Google Play) » Mobileuncle MTK Tools

2.4.0″

им

This program will open access to the engineering menu (that is, it will work similarly to dialing a combination
*#*#3646633#*#*)

There are a great many settings there! There is huge scope for experimentation! Almost EVERYTHING can be debugged and adjusted!

For clarity, let’s briefly look at setting the device’s volume level:

-Go into the program —> select the «Engineer Mode» section

иж

-Next select the section —> «Engineer Mode (MTK)

иж

-Because We are interested in adjusting the sound level, select —> «Audio»

иж

-And voila, the menu we are interested in opens.

иж

Next, you just need to “conjure” with the settings and adjust the device to suit you!

Max Vol — the same for the entire subsection, as a rule, it is set to 150 (you can change 0-160 — it changes if you select the Media item in the subsection).

If in some submenu, for example, Audio — Normal — Sph, the overall level is not available for adjustment, then enter another subsection, for example, Audio — Normal — Media — there will be an opportunity to adjust the overall volume level .

Sub-items:

Sph — volume levels during a telephone conversation,

Mic — microphone sensitivity levels,

Ring — ringer volume,

Media — volume when playing music, movies, and games.

Ring volume levels are set in Audio — LoudSpeaker — Ring

Max Vol = 150

Levels: 120 130 145 160 180 200 (starts to wheeze more)

Phone speaker conversation volume levels in Audio — Normal — Sph

Max Vol = 150

Levels: 100 120 130 135 140 145 150

Microphone conversation volume levels in Audio — Normal — Mic

Levels: 100 172 172 172 172 172 172

Media volume levels are set in Audio — LoudSpeaker — Media

Max Vol = 150 (it is the same for the entire section)

Levels: 110 130 160 190 210 230 250

The same can be configured for the Headphone mode, by analogy:

Speakerphone volume levels are set in Audio — LoudSpeaker — Sph

Max Vol = 150 (it is the same for the entire section)

Levels: 80 100 110 120 130 140 150 (starts to wheeze more)

Now all volumes are adjusted within adequate ranges.

If you are not satisfied with the volume levels, you can set your own values (the higher the value, the greater the volume when adjusting with the volume keys, or the greater the sensitivity of the microphone)

By analogy, you can configure most sections! Experiment!

If you can’t enter the menu

It is quite possible that you will try to enter all the above combinations, but will not get into the engineering menu. This happens on Android 6 and some other fairly recent versions of the operating system. Apparently, the engineering menu is locked, or some specific code is required to call it.

Nowadays, it is difficult to imagine a smartphone that does not have a camera installed. The shooting module has become an integral part of a mobile device, like Wi-Fi or a second SIM card slot. And of course, every user tries to take a good photo using a mobile camera.

Looking at the pictures posted on social networks or blogs, you will notice that even with a high-quality camera it is not always possible to take an equally high-quality photo. Sometimes the reason for this is the human factor — well, in principle, a person is not able to capture a beautiful shot — but most often the matter is that the user ignores or sets the camera settings incorrectly.

You can significantly improve the quality of photos and videos in three ways:

  • Using your own camera settings;
  • Through the engineering menu;
  • Using a special application.

In our article we will give basic tips for improving your photos, and also tell you in detail how to set up the camera on Android.

Before you start setting up your camera, you should understand the basic rules for shooting with a smartphone. By following these recommendations, you will already be halfway to quality photography.

  1. Keep the lens clean. Before shooting, wipe the lens with a soft cloth so that the image is not spoiled by smudges and dust particles that inevitably fall on the lens;
  2. Consider the light. It is extremely important that the subject is well lit. If you are photographing a person or object in a room, do not place it in front of a window so that the photo does not end up with one solid white spot. We’ll talk about how to adjust the camera to the lighting below;
  3. Don’t overuse zoom. Smartphone cameras are usually equipped with a digital enlarger, which greatly distorts the photo. If possible, it is better to come closer to the subject so as not to end up with a similar picture:
  1. Use the flash only for its intended purpose. If photography takes place at dusk, sometimes you can’t do without a flash. In this case, set it to Auto mode. The smartphone itself will “figure out” when it needs to be used. During the day, it’s better to avoid flash altogether:

In order to achieve a good picture, the user needs to set the right combination of camera settings that match the shooting conditions.

Let’s look at the main camera menu items in order:

Exposition. This function determines the amount of light that hits the camera sensor. As a rule, the exposure varies from -3 to 3. If you are shooting in the evening, set the exposure to positive. On a bright sunny day, it is better to reduce the exposure.

Xiaomi engineering menu

Despite the fact that our test Redmi 2 runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, it also has the functionality that interests us. To enter it, you need to tap on the “Kernel version” item several times in a row.

The menu consists of five items:

  1. Automatic Test. Automatic test of all device parameters.
  2. Single Item Test. Each of the 25 tests is taken separately. We will talk about this in detail below.
  3. Test Report. Report on the completed texts and their results.
  4. SW add HW version. Information about the smartphone version, IMEI and other numbers.
  5. Device View. Smartphone hardware data.

Of course, the most interesting item is the Single Item Test, where you can take a huge number of tests.

Let’s immediately make a reservation that in the device we tested there was no way to configure anything — only a functionality test. At the end of each procedure, you need to note its status: successful (success) or not (failed).

  • Key — functionality of physical buttons. Interestingly, it was not possible to complete it successfully, since when checking the power button, the smartphone turns off.
  • Backlight — display brightness.
  • TFlash. Testing a memory card with two results: either everything is fine, or the card is damaged.
  • Bluetooth. Searches for available devices.
  • SIM Card. Test for the presence of SIM cards.
  • Vibration. The gadget vibrates — everything is ok.
  • RTC (Real Time Clock) — operation of the built-in clock.
  • Speaker. Testing the conversational speaker. We didn’t understand how to get through it. We will be grateful if you can tell us in the comments.
  • Receiver. Translated as receiver, receiver, but music plays during testing.
  • Headset. Testing the 3.5mm jack to detect headphones, play sounds, and support headset control buttons.
  • Wi-Fi. Detection of nearby access points. There are no settings.
  • Torch (flashlight): shines / does not shine.
  • The loopback test includes a spoken microphone test. First, click Recording, then Playing.
  • LCD. Screen colors.
  • GPS. Detection of available satellites.
  • Gyro (gyroscope). Three parameters — X, Y, Z — change depending on the position of the device in space.
  • G-sensor (Accelerometer). Rotate the gadget in all planes and turn it over. The three parameters should be ok.
  • Proximity Sensor. It is usually located near the speaker and is designed to dim the gadget screen during a conversation, thereby eliminating accidental clicks.
  • Optical and Magnetic Sensor (optical and magnetic sensors) — points we don’t understand, share your knowledge in the comments.

After passing all tests, you can go to the Test Report section. As you can see, our “animal” is in excellent shape and has passed all the tests, which is very pleasing.

I can’t enter the Android engineering menu: reasons

  • Firstly, many smartphones or tablets with Qualcomm Snapdragon, Intel or Tegra processors either do not have a menu or are very difficult to access. In some cases, you don’t even have to try.
  • secondly, custom firmware may be the cause of the problems. In a number of them, access to configuration tools is simply absent or blocked. For example, you will not find an engineering menu in the CyanogenMod firmware, which is very popular among users. The reason is simple — the firmware was originally developed for Snapdragon-based devices.
  • thirdly, the source of the problems may be the manufacturer himself, who hid the engineering menu more reliably or decided to remove it altogether. This also includes various types of errors from which none of the devices are insured.

Actually, solutions to problems lie on the surface. If the smartphone is powered by Snapdragon, Intel or Tegra, then in most cases nothing can be done. However, even on these devices you can access a number of hidden settings, which we will discuss below.

By the way, on Xiaomi smartphones, which are mostly based on chips from Qualcomm, you can access the engineering by clicking several times on “Kernel version” in the smartphone settings (section “About phone”). Finally, in some cases, flashing your Android device to stock (official) firmware will help.

The second way to open access to the engineering menu is through applications. There are quite a few of them, you can download them for free from, but almost all of them are designed for smartphones based on the MediaTek processor. The MTK Engineering Mode application has proven itself quite well.

Again, it’s not a fact that each of the programs will work smoothly on your device — there are a hundred reasons why they will refuse to function. These tools are developed by small companies, so you’ll probably have to try a few.

This is not the case in either iPhones or other Androids — features of the kirin 980 processor (part 2)

Huawei don’t yet know whether they will have time to “screw” this function into future mobile phones — after all, the cameras should also be good, so that you don’t turn out to be a soap smudge against the background of a clear street, and from a programmatic point of view, everything must be “polished”, otherwise this function will not end with anything but anecdotes. But there is potential, and there will be work for dual neurosensors.

Do you want to experience the pain of disappointment immediately after being delighted with new technologies? Now let’s do it: with all the intelligent “bells and whistles” in working with cameras, the new Kirin definitely can’t
record video in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second (like the Samsung S9 does). Recording 4K video with stabilization is also questionable (Samsung, again, can do all this). I hope that at least HDR video, as Sony does, will be mastered by Chinese cameras and processors, otherwise we will get a “bright future” in half with the video shooting potential of very old smartphones. Because shooting “just” 4K video appeared in mobile phones back in 2020
.

It is customary to remember the maximum speeds of Wi-Fi and 4G with the saying: “It’s a pity that neither I nor you will have to live in this wonderful time.” But there is no need to renounce either, because many Muscovites still remember some of the idiocy of the situation when 4G in Russia appeared in Penza, Krasnoyarsk, Kursk, Kirov, Novosibirsk, Samara, Vladivostok, Ufa, Krasnodar Territory, Sochi, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Kostroma , Vladimir, Tula, Yoshkar-Ola, Khabarovsk, Tomsk, Seversk and Orenburg… and only then began to work normally in Moscow. And the guys from Ukraine will confirm that not so long ago buying a smartphone with 4G support did not make sense, but times are changing.

In general, let’s be happy that the Kirin 980 is able to “digest” data transfer at a speed of 1400 Mbit/s (versus 1200 Mbit/s for the Snapdragon 845) and 1700 Mbit/s via Wi-Fi versus 1083 Mbit/s at Qualcomm’s.

Just don’t think that all smartphones with Kirin 980 on board will support such speeds. All these numbers mean “the maximum that we will cram into the largest and most expensive smartphone, and not necessarily the one closest in terms of release date.”

Contact management

The Contacts application will help you set up your Honor phone to easily find the information you need about phone numbers. It has the following functions:

  • setting the display of contacts stored on only the device or only the SIM card;
  • quick search for frequently used contacts;
  • merging duplicate contacts;
  • viewing contacts from different accounts: to view only contacts on the device or SIM card, you need to select Contact filter, then accounts to display.
  • simplified mode: hide photo, company name and contact position. To do this, select > Contact filter and enable Simplified mode.
  • number of contacts in the account: select Contact filter, in the Accounts field see the number of contacts saved on the device and SIM card, and the amount of free space.
  • Add to Favorites: On the contact list screen, tap the desired contact, then tap Add to Favorites.
  • Group Management: The smart groups feature automatically groups contacts by company name and city. You can send them a group message or email.
    1. Create a contact group: click on the list of groups, enter the group name (Family, Friends, Work), click OK. Follow the onscreen instructions to add contacts to the group.
    2. Sending a message to a group of contacts: In the Smart Groups section, open the group and tap the message icon to send a group message or email.
    3. Editing a group: On the group list screen, select the group you want to edit, click the plus sign to add a contact, or click the three dots icon to remove members, group ringtone, delete or rename the group.
    4. Delete a group: On the group list screen, press and hold the group name, then Delete.
  • Manage blacklist:
    1. open the Contacts application, click on a contact on hold, then click on the “Add to Blacklist” menu. The device will block all calls and messages from contacts on the blacklist.
    2. View contacts in an emergency: the “Phone Manager” application, click on “Blocked”, “Black list of numbers”.
    3. Removing contacts from the black list: Contacts application, press and hold a contact, click on the “Remove from black list” menu.
  • Delete all mentions and actions with a contact: Contacts application, select the contact, select “Delete all mentions of the contact”.

People’s reviews

Do owners of Honor and Huawei smartphones use engineering mode in everyday life? Let’s find out from their reviews:

  1. Anton. I have Huawei P20. After six months of use, the sound began to disappear. I answer people, I hear them worse and worse. Cleaned the speaker. Did not help. Thanks to access to the engineering mode, I was able to correct the situation completely on my own, without resorting to the help of paid specialists.
  2. Regina. A friend of mine gave me a Huawei Y5 II. I like the phone, but I wasn’t initially happy with the camera. I gave it to a friend. Using this menu, he was able to reconfigure it so that I started to like everything. So this is a very useful feature.
  3. Vladimir. I tried to access this menu from my Honor 7A Pro. But I couldn’t, unfortunately. Well, okay, I’m guaranteed not to mess it up there!
  4. Igor. I learned about this opportunity a long time ago. Naturally, I also found out the access code for my Honor 9 lite. I’m entering. Don `t come in. I tried it five times. But now I’ve learned that you can’t copy — you just have to enter it manually. I tried it now. It turns out that everything works great. Thanks for the info!
  5. Oleg. I don’t know why, but on my Huawei Y3 only Project Menu launches. Maybe I’m using the wrong passwords? I seem to be entering it carefully. Or some special version of my gadget.
  6. Marina. I have a simple Honor 10 lite. But I really like the smartphone. For me personally, this is the ideal phone, with the right settings. That’s why I didn’t even try to change anything about it. I know that I will only make everything worse.
  7. Yaroslav. It runs on Honor 8X without any problems. The engineering menu really provides a lot of information and opportunities. True, I’m still studying everything carefully. Then I will experiment. In fact, it can be adjusted so that even no additional firmware is needed.

It is important to understand that the engineering menu was not initially intended for active use by ordinary people. Therefore, if you decide to take advantage of its capabilities, you should think in advance about the likely consequences of the changes made, and also clearly understand the purpose of this or that action.

Huawei service codes (also called engineering codes) make it possible to check the device for errors, malfunctions and general performance. In addition, they allow you to obtain information about your smartphone that may be needed to configure or update the software.
