Dimensions and design – 3.9
Huawei Honor 5X is quite compact for its large screen. Its dimensions are 151.3 x 76.3 x 8.6 mm and its weight is 158 grams. It’s slightly shorter and wider than the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium, but noticeably smaller than the iPhone 6S Plus. It is not that heavy for its diagonal size, only slightly heavier than the 5.2-inch Samsung Galaxy A5 (2020). Comparison with its classmate in terms of price, Zenfone 2 Laser ZE550KL, is in favor of the Honor 5X on all counts.
The smartphone body is wide, but fits quite comfortably in a large palm. True, using it with one hand is inconvenient even with the help of the special “One-handed control” mode. With it, the image is compressed to the size of a 4-inch screen, which looks very strange.
From the front, the smartphone looks rather faceless, and from the back it resembles Huawei Honor 7. It is distinguished from the same Honor 4X by the absence of separate buttons on the front surface of the body; they are implemented higher, on the touch panel of the display. The frames look thinner due to a technique used in the Honor 4C – a small area around the screen is painted black, and when the phone is turned off, it merges with the dark surface of the display.
The rear panel of Honor 5X can be called memorable. In gold it looks like the back of an expensive device – the textured metal looks good. There is a fast fingerprint scanner under the camera lens. The transition from the back panel to the side ends was made unusual – it is not smooth, but chopped, due to this an additional narrow edge appears along the edges of the back.
Even the control keys on the side were made textured and pleasant to the touch. But what we found strange were the plastic inserts for the antennas at the top and bottom edges of the backrest – with their dotted texture, they look like flesh-colored plaster. Moreover, it is not clear why the lens was made to protrude from the body.
The build quality is high – the phone is built well, does not creak under pressure and does not want to bend. Some people may not like the fact that the phone body is non-separable, but that’s the price to pay for metal. During the tests, Honor 5X almost did not lose its presentation, although the back collects dirt and fingerprints at a moderate speed.
Huawei Honor 5X can be purchased in three colors – gold, graphite gray and metallic silver.
The price for Huawei Honor 5X as of March 2020 is 17,000 rubles. With its characteristics and price, let’s name Huawei Honor 4X and Asus Zenfone 2 ZE551ML as competitors.
Huawei Honor 4X can be called the predecessor of the 5X – today this 5.5-inch smartphone costs on average 3.5 thousand rubles cheaper, but also offers more modest specifications. Its plastic body is larger and heavier, it does not have a fingerprint sensor, it also uses an older chipset and a less clear screen, and the Honor 4X sits a little faster. In terms of cameras, communications, OS and interface, the devices can be said to have parity.
Asus Zenfone 2 ZE551ML is a budget flagship from the Koreans, the version with 16 GB of memory costs on average one to two thousand rubles more. It stands out for its design and the location of the button on the back, higher performance and the availability of modifications to 32, 64 GB of internal and 4 GB of RAM.
Housing, design, quality
The adjective “luxurious” comes first in the title of the review, because the performance of the Honor 5X is truly impeccable. Engineers and designers have invested in the physical shell to the maximum, and this is felt from the first touch. Look at the grace of curves, the combination of materials, the neatness of shapes and the precision of fitting of body parts.
Now imagine how much money some well-known brand would ask for such beauty.
The back cover is made of a cunningly prepared aircraft-grade aluminum alloy. The manufacturer’s website talks about four-stage processing, which includes sandblasting. The result is a metallic “velvet” that is very pleasant to the touch. That is, it is, of course, not a soft material like rubberized plastic, but microscopic surface irregularities create the effect of something warm, not quite metallic.
The textured plastic inserts at the top and bottom are beautifully crafted and fit.
I tried to grab onto them by running my fingernail along the body, and had difficulty catching the transition between metal and plastic. The edges between the back and side panels are strict, but not sharp. In these places, the aluminum is simply machined, that is, absolutely smooth, without velvety.
The front panel surprises with the ratio of total area to screen area. With a 5.5-inch matrix diagonal and very small gaps between the edges of the screen and the body, it seems as if the entire Honor 5X is one large display.
The feeling is slightly extinguished in the gold and silver models, but the black Honor 5X with a predominance of dark tones on the screen practically erases the understanding of where the display ends and the body begins.
Above the screen there is a speaker for conversations, a front camera, an LED that acts as a backlight for selfies, and a barely noticeable color event indicator.
The space below the screen does not contain any elements.
The top panel houses a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. At the bottom there is a microUSB port, a speaker and a microphone, hidden behind classic round cutouts. It all looks very good, and two fixing screws next to the USB add even more capital and luxury.
The power button and volume rocker are on the right. With a ribbed texture and clear movement, they are easy to locate with your finger and do not wobble when trying to shake the smartphone. No complaints here.
The general desire to reduce the thickness of mobile devices sometimes leads to serious miscalculations. The camera module sticks out from the body, but that’s nothing. It is much worse if the module frame is made of metal, and its shape is angular and sharp. In this case, you may well accidentally scratch the table. Honor 5X has a rounded frame with the same rounded edges. It is pleasant to touch, it is completely safe even for the most scratch-resistant furniture.
Pay attention to the shape and size of the fingerprint scanner. Engineers have significantly reduced the reading surface area, which requires a little more precision from your hand, but as compensation gives an almost zero failure rate when unlocking.
The manufacturer talks about using a new version of the scanner in Honor 5X, calling it “Fingerprint Scanner 2.0”. It is really fast and there is no delay in the unlocking process. I just felt the recess of the scanner, and the screen is already ready for use.
The slots for SIM cards and memory cards deserve special attention. As you can see, they are separated here.
The first flap hides a paired platform for installing one nanoSIM and one microSIM, and both cards can work in 4G. The second slot is only for microSD cards up to and including 128GB.
This approach is definitely better for the user. No difficult decisions about “two SIM cards or a SIM card”. Everything at the same time, and that’s wonderful.
Review of the Huawei honor 5x smartphone: convenience without overpayment
Let’s take this everyday situation. It’s time to change your old smartphone, but it’s not clear what to choose from the new ones. It seems like you don’t want to overpay, but you also don’t want to buy a very simple device, it will quickly get boring. You come to the store, and there is a row of faceless smartphones on the shelf. A smart seller recommends a new product for the season, take it, he says, this device. They just arrived, they are selling out quickly, the last one remains in the warehouse, and this sample is on display. And what is this strange little beast Honor 5X? Huawei is behind the device, but there is not a single hieroglyph on the body, not a single inscription from Big Brother.
It is logical that Honor 5X replaced Honor 4X. It was a well-tailored, but completely boring smartphone in terms of materials: a modest plastic remnant, one of hundreds of its own. Honor 7 was released last year
, and everything is in order with its appearance, so Huawei didn’t bother with the design of the new device and made the 5X very similar to the “seven”.
Honor 5X is a big smartphone. It has a 5.5-inch screen, but the display is surrounded by small bezels, so by the standards of large smartphones it’s a fairly adequate size. Yes, for most actions you need to take the phone with both hands; you simply won’t be able to use it any other way.
The body is almost entirely metal, with only small plastic inserts at the ends. Even if the new Huawei doesn’t look good from the front, you take it in your hand and rejoice – metal is better than cheap plastic. The back is decorated with a pattern of stripes, everything shimmers in the light. The beautiful design is pleasing to the eye and amphibious when you see how much famous brands charge for metal finishing.
It happens that they make plastic “to look like metal” in a similar style, but you can’t go wrong here, especially when you use a smartphone in the cold without gloves – the device becomes icy in seconds. But you don’t have to take off the gloves – the settings provide a function for operating the device while wearing gloves. The accuracy of pressing suffers, but the fingers are warmer.
I received a smartphone in gold color. The color is undoubtedly fashionable, but in this version the black frame around the screen catches the eye. So in a dark version the device should look more organic.
Not very stable
The phone cannot be called super-thin or particularly light, but for a 5.5-inch device it does not look like an oversized giant; compared to the old 4X, it has generally become smaller in all respects.
The camera lens is surrounded by a thin rim, and the smartphone rests on it when we place it on the table. Will it get scratched over time? It’s possible, but I can’t say for sure. But because of it, the phone cannot lie flat on the surface; as soon as you touch it with your finger, it starts to wobble.
Large screen under film
5.5 inches, resolution 1080 x 1920, IPS panel without air gap. Compared to the Honor 4X, there is progress, there the pixel density was lower, but here there are 401 pixels per inch, the grain cannot be seen even if one wants to. The screen is decent: good anti-glare layer, wide viewing angles, rich image. What else is needed for happiness? They even put a film here to protect the scratch-resistant glass. The film protects the safe.
Not satisfied with the ready-made display settings? You can change the color temperature through your smartphone settings. By default, the phone goes “blue,” so this option will not be superfluous.
Old Android with bells and whistles
Want the latest Android? Buy 5X. Not Honor, but Nexus
, that’s where “marshmallow” 6.0 will be. And Honor 5X has the good old Lollipop 5.1 with the proprietary “add-on” EMUI 3.1. Despite the fact that the sixth version of Google’s mobile OS has been available since October, manufacturers are in no particular hurry to release new devices with fresh software to the market. In this case, just such an example.
The shell sometimes shakes, minor twitching can be experienced, but it’s worth noting.
To make it more convenient to use, we added many functions: here you can control the screen with one hand, unlock by double tapping, a smart profile with notifications works so that in the middle of the night the smartphone does not wake up your household with a loud signal when another portion of spam arrives in the mailbox. If three touch buttons under the screen are not enough, then add a fourth to them in the smartphone settings; it will help you go to the quick access menu.
The light indicator works, the diode blinks brightly, the indicator is clearly visible not only in the dark, but also during the day.
Average all around
Last year, Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 was found in many smartphones, and Honor 5X also received this chip. The operating frequency of the computing cores is 1.5 GHz, Adreno 405 graphics, 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory. The data storage volume can always be increased using a microSD slot; if desired, we can install a drive there up to 128 GB inclusive. I note that the presence of microSD does not affect the second SIM card, the slots are separate. And not like in many devices, where a memory card has to be installed instead of an additional SIM. There is no USB-OTG support; the smartphone refused to read data from the connected flash drive.
I present the indicators in the tests for clarity. If you put the feelings into words, then everything is very ordinary, not bad, but there are no great achievements either. The power is not enough for demanding toys, but if you don’t want to turn your smartphone into a gaming console, then you can forget about this point. The browser doesn’t lag, it plays high-quality movies, and what else do you need when you’re going to work on the subway and want to pass the time by reading a book or watching another TV series.
The flagship function has also reached a simpler smartphone, I mean a fingerprint sensor. But where to look for a scanner if it is not visible from the front? And it, like in Honor 7 and Mate series smartphones, is located at the back.
This may be unusual at first glance, but it is convenient – when you hold the phone in your hand, your index finger exactly hits the scanner pad. Entering your data is easy; Honor 5X will remember your finger in just 6 touches. Against the background Samsung Galaxy A7
, where for the same operation you need to do about 30 similar actions, this is progress. The scanner helps to unlock your smartphone, you can use it to turn off the alarm clock, and use it as a shutter for the camera.
The speaker is good: you can hear your interlocutor perfectly, and the quality of voice transmission is excellent. The multimedia speaker is also fine. It is located on the bottom end, the place is chosen wisely: it will be difficult to block the speaker with something when the phone is on the table or in your pocket. Take a look at the design: from the outside it seems like there are two speakers. But the second set of holes here is fake.
In the SIM card settings, we set different signals for calls and messages for each number. The function is not new, I’ll just note that it is present here.
13 megapixels for day but not night
The main camera is 13 MP (5-lens optics, f/2.0), the front camera is 5 MP (4-lens optics, f/2.4). But if you don’t go into details, but look at the shooting examples, then the quality can be described with the word “normal”. The detail here is average; the phone rarely misses the mark with white balance. However, it is better not to take pictures at night – the pictures come out too noisy.
Several screens with settings options:
LTE and dual SIM
We are already so accustomed to the fact that Chinese smartphones come with a pair of SIM cards that the presence of two slots in the device is taken for granted. The new product lives up to expectations; the Honor 5X can accommodate two cards, one of them in micro-SIM format, and the other in nano format. The smartphone reliably picks up Wi-Fi networks 802.11 b/g/n at frequencies of 2.4 and 5 GHz. Both SIM cards can work in LTE networks, we select this in the settings. Perhaps someone will miss NFC, I love this function for its simplicity: I put the phone on the headphones, and the pairing is ready, there is no need to launch the search mode. Among the settings, there is a useful function for saving traffic; you can deprive applications of Internet access at will.
Navigation works well; in 30 seconds of searching, Honor 5X will find about 20-25 satellites of GPS and GLONASS systems.
Two days away from the outlet
The 3,000 mAh battery does not fail: charging lasts for two days. During this time, about 4 hours of active screen accumulates. If you watch a video on YouTube, then in an hour at maximum brightness the display loses 15-17%, so a fully charged battery will last for 6.5-7 hours of watching online movies. In games, it takes about 18-20% per hour, a good figure.
Energy saving settings:
The price of Honor 5X at the start of sales is 16-17 thousand rubles. It’s not the most productive for the money, but if you don’t chase power when choosing a new smartphone, you’ll like this option for its balanced capabilities. It has a neat appearance, high-quality finish, a comfortable shell and many nice little things like glove control and a fingerprint scanner.
If your budget is limited, then for 15 thousand you can buy Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 5.5
, there will be exactly the same filling. 19 thousand cost Lenovo P90
and ASUS ZenFone 2
, Honor 7 is sold for 25 thousand, the new Samsung Galaxy A5 (2020) costs the same
, and the more powerful Meizu MX5
with 32 GB of memory it costs 30 thousand.

Huawei Honor 5X can be called powerful enough for most phone tasks, it is not suitable only for the heaviest games.
The smartphone is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 processor (4 cores at up to 1.2 GHz, 4 cores at 1.5 GHz). The amount of RAM is 2 GB, which can be called standard for a mid-range phone. In daily use, the Honor 5X works quite smoothly, but not perfectly fast – sometimes when switching between modes, applications or different menus, the device hesitates for a while.
But this will be more noticeable for those who are accustomed to top-end devices. Most games launch and run without problems. Only the most severe of them cause noticeable (to the eye) problems. Thus, NOVA 3 noticeably slows down, and Asphalt 8 “jerks” at high graphics. On medium settings it becomes playable, but still lags from time to time.
If we consider synthetic tests, then Honor 5X shows above average results:
- in GeekBench 3 (processor performance) – 3045 points (only half a thousand inferior to Huawei Honor 7)
- in AnTuTu 6.0 (mixed test) – 35658 (5000 higher than Huawei Honor 4X)
- in 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited (graphics test) – up to 7963 (comparable to Lenovo Vibe Shot
