After years of waiting for smartphones with foldable screens, manufacturers began to demonstrate their devices. Recently, Samsung presented its novelty, and now Huawei. But unlike the Galaxy Fold, the Huawei Mate X has an eight-inch screen that curves outward rather than inward.
At the International Mobile World Congress 2019 (MWC), which takes place in Barcelona from February 25 to 28, Huawei introduced the long-awaited smartphone with a foldable screen. The Huawei Mate X features an eight-inch screen that curves outward rather than inward. Thanks to this difference, once folded, its owner gets a phone with a 6.6-inch screen. The Samsung Galaxy Fold has a much smaller screen — only 4.6 inches. Sales of the smartphone will begin in mid-2019.
The processor
Huawei Mate X is equipped with the Kirin 980 processor and Huawei Balong 5000 modem, which allows the smartphone to support 5G. The device has eight gigabytes of RAM and 512 gigabytes of permanent memory, and for more expansion there is a slot supporting Huawei NM memory cards with up to 256 gigabytes.
Battery
The battery capacity of the device was 4,500 mAh. Huawei’s 55W SuperCharge technology, which will be tested for the first time specifically on the Mate X, not only surpasses the 40W charge in the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, but can raise the Mate X’s charge from zero to 85 percent in just 30 minutes.
Operating system
The Mate X has a specialized version of Android. It knows about bending and unfolding, the interface optimizes itself to the orientation of the tablet or phone in milliseconds. The screen resolution of the new smartphone is 2480 by 2200 pixels. The design of the device itself, which attracts attention, is based on the possibility to bend half of the screen back for convenience.
Display
The Mate X uses a single eight-inch flexible OLED panel to give the user three screens. When the device is folded down, you have one 6.6-inch main display with a flip side combined with an extended 6.4-inch rear display. The latter allows you to take selfies with the main camera system. Once you open the device, you get an almost square and almost bezel-less eight-inch screen.
Thus, the phone will use one of two halves of the screen: with a diagonal of 6.6 inches and an aspect ratio of 19.5 to 9, or with a diagonal of 6.4 inches and an aspect ratio of 25 to 9.
Camera
The difference in modes is explained by the cameras (with a resolution of 40, 16 and eight megapixels) and control buttons, the protrusion for which is provided on the side of the device. The thickness of the smartphone in the folded state is 11 millimeters, and in the unfolded — 5.4 millimeters. It is worth noting that the screen of Mate X has withstood 100,000 bends in stress tests conducted in the laboratory.
Flaws
At the same time, the smartphone has several disadvantages. For example, due to the possibility of folding and unfolding the screen at the folding point, there is a noticeable gap, which no manufacturer has yet succeeded in hiding. In addition, concerns about durability are caused by the moving parts of the device.
Another disadvantage can be considered the price of the smartphone, which was 2,299 euros, while the cost of the folding device Samsung Galaxy Fold — 1,740 euros.
Samsung plans to release its smartphone in April, and Huawei will release the Mate X in June, offering a higher price but adding a sticker advertising 5G.
