Huawei p10 plus: characteristics review and display testing

The Huawei P10 Plus smartphone has a 5.5-inch diagonal IPS display with QHD resolution. In terms of dry characteristics, we see significant differences from the younger version, differences for the better. The diagonal is smaller than that of the LG G6 or S8, but given the Koreans’ synchronous transition to a new aspect ratio (18:9 and 18.5:9, respectively), it is no longer possible to directly compare the screens. But you can compare them based on picture quality, which is what we will do.

The Huawei P10 Plus screen produces excellent black color depth (0.335 cd/m2). The display brightness (547 nits) is at flagship level, as is its contrast (1633:1). The LG G6’s display in max auto mode produces deeper blacks at comparable brightness, which ultimately provides a noticeable advantage in contrast. We see a similar picture when comparing the P10 Plus with the HTC U Ultra.

Color accuracy was somewhat disappointing. The average color accuracy coefficient was 5.5, the maximum was 9.3. The color gamut is noticeably blue, but this can be corrected by selecting a warm picture preset in the screen settings. With these settings, DeltaE is reduced to 4.1 and 5.8, respectively. Not a standard, but quite acceptable result.

Huawei P10 Plus has good viewing angles. The readability of the display in the sun deserves a rating of very good, although not excellent. Smartphones with AMOLED matrices are far ahead in this indicator. Among competitors in the IPS league, many have better readability in the sun — the LG G6, iPhone 7 and even last year’s Huawei flagships.

Impressions

Clear, loud call, excellent vibration alert, which is well felt both in your pockets and in your bag. Noise reduction works great on a noisy street, so the P10 performs at its best as a phone.

I like the EMUI shell, as well as the set of additional features and little things that Huawei adds to its phones, many of them straight from the Galaxy line. It is not so important who was the first to introduce certain features, the main thing is that they are present and this is a big plus. The model turned out to be successful from all points of view: a good camera, fast charging and a day of reliable operation, excellent sound both in headphones and in speakerphone mode when playing music.

This is not just an update to the P9, but a fundamentally new model, which is in many ways similar to the Mate 9. An excellent device, which in Russia goes on sale at a price of 35,990 rubles in the 32 GB version and 39,990 rubles in the 32 GB version 64 GB. To understand, P10 Plus will cost 44,990 rubles, it will appear a little later.

The P10 Lite is also coming out in April, this is a much lighter version of the P10, in which almost all the characteristics have been simplified, but the appearance of the older model has been retained. But the price of this device will be about 18 thousand rubles. Having sorted out the lineup from Huawei, it’s time to talk about who the Huawei P10 competes with.

The first model that comes to mind is the regular Galaxy S7, the design of these models is relatively flat, they have a comparable screen diagonal. But the S7 is last year’s flagship, and it wins on several counts:

• QHD screen resolution versus FullHD, support for VR glasses;
• Wireless charging;
• Water and dust protection IP68;
• SuperAMOLED screen and additional energy saving modes;
• AlwaysOn Display, the ability to always display an image on the screen without compromising operating time.

In official retail, this device costs 42,990 rubles, which is quite justified; on the gray market it can be found for 33-35 thousand rubles. The price difference with the P10 looks justified, given that the old guy can still do a lot and has already received Android 7. The positioning of the P10 under the S7 in terms of price is justified, otherwise the model would not be in demand.

Review of the flagship Samsung Galaxy S7 (SM-G930)

There is no point in considering a host of Chinese models; in this price group, they usually have a 5.5-5.7-inch screen, and not a compact 5-inch screen. The second point that distinguishes Chinese smartphones: in terms of hardware, LTE operation, speed and other characteristics, they lag far behind Huawei.

As a result, their lower price is quite real, you just get models that look and actually are weaker. As for me, the Huawei P10 is an excellent smartphone with a compact size and a good camera, which is suitable for everyone who for some reason does not want to buy an iPhone 6 or Galaxy S7.

Huawei p10 plus design

Huawei P10 Plus received an all-metal body. The screen and camera module are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. This is one of the most practical solutions on the market and gives this device a considerable head start. Competitors with glass backs are much more vulnerable to mechanical damage. Dust/moisture protection class — IP X3.

Huawei P10 Plus will be available with both one and two SIM cards (for different markets). The smartphone received USB Type-C (which, however, works according to the outdated USB 2.0 standard), support for Wi-Fi 5Ghz, NFC and an infrared port for controlling home appliances. The fingerprint scanner is traditionally located on the front panel.

Despite the Plus prefix, this smartphone is practically no different in size from the previous Huawei P9 Plus. Measuring 152.3 x 75.3 x 7mm, the P10 Plus is 1.2mm shorter and 0.9mm wider. It is convenient to use the device with one hand.

In terms of design, there are no comments on the P10 Plus and there cannot be any. The brand has taken a clear course towards premiumness, and even in cheaper models, the quality of materials, workmanship and ergonomics of the devices remain at their best. Users have access to glossy and polished backdrop options. Gloss has a vinyl-like texture and a very unusual feel, while polished surfaces are more familiar, but early test reports indicate that these back panels are not resistant to mechanical damage.

The main camera module is protected by 5th generation Corning Gorilla Glass, the glass does not protrude or rise above the surface.

On the front panel there is a fingerprint scanner, an 8MP camera, sensors and an LED indicator for notifying about recent events.

There is only one control button — the developer calls it the multifunctional Home button. In fact, this is not a button at all, but a module located under the glass. The sensor is always active, it reads your fingerprint and recognizes gestures to control the device.

The button is not mechanical — it is literally impossible to press it. Nevertheless, it performs all the same functions as the traditional one — a hold returns the user to the main screen, one short click takes a step back, a swipe opens the active taskbar. The fingerprint scanner has received PayPal certification, so you can safely use your fingerprint instead of entering a password to log into your account and make payments through this system.

Huawei P10 Plus is equipped with one Nano SIM card tray. In most cases, this is a hybrid slot (where you can install a memory card instead of one SIM card). Today this is no longer the most practical solution. Users don’t like the either/or tradeoff. Moreover, many manufacturers equip smartphones with a separate slot for memory cards and no questions arise.

Design. We’ve already seen this somewhere

When I look at the Huawei P10 Plus, I get a distinct feeling of “I’ve seen this somewhere before.”

No, I don’t think Huawei designers stupidly copied the iPhone 7 Plus. Rather, they borrowed from the Cupertino guys a concept or overall design vision.

Compared to the previous generation, the P10 and P10 Plus focus on minimalism and simple forms. No shiny edges, polished bevels or logos.

It is clear that Huawei engineers tried to remove all the “flashy” elements, replacing them with something less flashy.

Sleek aluminum body, 2.5D glass and minimal parts. The easiest way to describe Huawei P10 Plus is this.

Even the signature glass strip above the cameras began to look less noticeable. The texture was removed — now there is just black glass with rounded edges.

Do I like this approach? Rather yes than no. Huawei P10 Plus looks like a premium A-brand smartphone, and not another faceless “rattle” from China.

The Huawei logo on the black metal of the case is barely noticeable. If you are not aware of the mobile market, then you will not understand that you are holding Huawei in your hands.

Do I like the look of Huawei P10 Plus? More likely no than yes. In pursuit of minimalism, Huawei designers forgot to add some zest to its appearance.

I would like to add a bright detail to the body of Huawei P10 Plus. For example, paint the glass insert red or make the Home button matte.

Huawei P10 Plus is stylish, but it lacks something.

Now about the buttons of the P10 Plus. Huawei has removed the fingerprint scanner from the back and moved it to the front. A strange decision to please Chinese trends — they ran away from the “Chinese” design, but made the button like all the “Chinese” ones. For what?

Looks like an oval Home button, but it’s just a touch pad. The scanner speed is amazingly fast, working 10 out of 10 times. But there are questions about ergonomics, more details in the next paragraph.

In keeping with the tradition of the P series, the metal power button has received an intricate design. Red chamfer color and ribbed texture. Huawei designers really love this element in the Huawei P10 Plus case. The volume control key was made invisible, but it is also metal.

The USB Type-C port and the 3.5 mm jack are located at the bottom end, where one of the stereo speakers is also located. At the top end there is an infrared sensor and an additional microphone. Let’s look at the gallery with all the ends:

Camera. leica f/1.8 = cool shots

Huawei P10 Plus has a dual Leica camera from Huawei Mate 9 (review). 12 MP color 20 MP monochrome. The camera is worthy of a flagship.

The only difference lies in the new lenses. The Huawei P10 Plus cameras were equipped with new SUMMILUX-H 1:1.8/27 lenses with f/1.8 aperture, while Huawei Mate 9 and Huawei P10 received the “old” SUMMARIT-H lens with f/2.2 aperture. That’s the whole difference.

Huawei P10 Plus shoots exactly the same as its brothers P10 and Mate 9, but in some scenes it can set a lower ISO value, which means there will be a little less noise.

In automatic mode, I couldn’t tell the difference between the Mate 9 and P10 Plus cameras, except when shooting at night, and then not always. But if you dabble with manual mode, then the Huawei P10 Plus camera can do a little more.

The pictures are obtained with an artistic effect; the algorithms of Huawei and Leica perfectly understand how to “draw” a picture so that the user likes it. And even if the photos come out noisier than those of competitors, who cares if they turn out much more “alive”.

I believe that the cameras in Huawei flagships have become more convenient for mobile photographers. This is a versatile and powerful tool. True b/w shooting, the most convenient manual mode and RAW support.

What else do you need? Oh yes, a telephoto lens, like in the iPhone 7 Plus, but Huawei has a 2x “lossless” zoom, the quality of which is not much inferior to the iPhone.

Huawei p10 plus sound quality: review for audiophiles

In the review of Huawei P10, GSMArena experts noted that one of the main disadvantages of the audio part of the smartphone is quiet sound. Huawei P10 Plus has the same problem. When connecting an external amplifier, low volume is not critical; moreover, the smartphone produces excellent sound quality in terms of the degree of noise and distortion.

When headphones are connected, noticeable harmonic and intermodulation distortions appear (KGI 0.221, KII 0.239). Compared to budget smartphones, such a coefficient of nonlinear distortion would look normal, but in the field of flagships the disadvantage is obvious. L G G6, iPhone 7 and Galaxy S7 produce a cleaner signal.

Competitors

For the summer of 2020, Huawei P10 Plus can be purchased at a price of 40,000 rubles. This is cheaper than the flagships of famous brands, but more expensive than other “Chinese” ones. Taking into account the positioning and characteristics of Huawei P10 Plus, we will name OnePlus 3T and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus as competitors.

OnePlus 3T is a slightly thicker but lighter smartphone, with a more powerful chipset and slightly better battery life. The P10 Plus stands out with splash protection, a dual camera, a clearer screen and an IR blaster. At the same time, OnePlus 3T is almost a third cheaper.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus is the leader of our smartphone rating, the owner of a huge screen in almost the same body, but still a little larger and heavier. Its arsenal includes many different sensors (pulse oximeter, iris scanner, etc.), higher autonomy and a very unusual design. At the same time, the Galaxy S8 Plus costs much more and suffers from the inconvenient location of the fingerprint scanner.

Huawei P10 Plus battery capacity is 3750 mAh, which is more than its direct competitors. When compared with P10, we get an increase of 550 mAh. Compared to the LG G6, the capacity is 450 mAh higher. HTC U Ultra and Galaxy S8 have 3000 mAh batteries, so the advantage of the Chinese flagship here is more than noticeable. The S8 also lags behind, albeit a little.

The question is how much will the increased battery capacity extend the battery life of the smartphone? Testing in different operating modes showed that Huawei P10 Plus holds a charge well. The results are in the table.

In terms of battery life, Huawei P10 Plus is slightly ahead of its younger brother. One would expect a greater advantage, but the difference in diagonal and screen resolution has an effect — the P10 Plus’s QHD display consumes more energy.

When compared with the LG G6, the advantage of the Chinese flagship becomes more obvious. We see a similar picture when compared with the HTC U Ultra, data on the autonomy of which you can see in a detailed review of the new HTC product. The Galaxy S8 (according to preliminary data) has a battery life of less than 10 hours when the screen is active, so the main Chinese flagship is ahead here too.

What conclusions can be drawn from the Huawei P10 Plus comparative review? The phone turned out great. Premium design, impeccable build quality, an excellent processor, a unique dual camera module with monochrome, a sufficient supply of RAM and internal memory — every potential buyer will find arguments in favor of the new flagship from the Middle Kingdom. The price is a little confusing — at a cost of around 750 euros, with shortcomings, and the Huawei P10 Plus also has them, somehow I don’t really want to put up with it.

Advantages of Huawei P10 Plus

• Premium design and build quality.
• Ultra-fast processor that is not subject to overheating.
• The camera with Leica optics and SUMMILUX lenses is one of the best on the market.
• Screen with deep blacks, good brightness, contrast and readability in sunlight.
• Good battery life rating, higher than most competitors.

Disadvantages of Huawei P10 Plus

• No dust and moisture protection. Protection class IP03 protects the smartphone only from splashes. Immersion in water is out of the question.
• The front camera lacks focusing accuracy. Portrait mode was disappointing.
• Quiet sound, sound quality in headphones leaves much to be desired.
• The correctness of the display’s color rendering is poor, although not on both legs.
• USB Type-C is still v.2.0.
