FOR HONOR

Gameplay for honor

Regarding the gameplay, the project is innovative in many ways. You can’t immediately name any famous games in which elements of Dark Souls, Mortal Kombat, and Onimusha are so interestingly intertwined. The main element here is war and fights. One on one, two on two, teams, elimination, control points.

It depends on the selected mode. There are five of them here. Each is good in its own way, but also has its shortcomings. The only thing that’s ideal is the duel, there’s nothing to complain about. In a mass battle for territory, scattering enemies in batches will not work. One fighter has little chance against two living opponents, and if there are more of them, then the chances are zero.

This is due to the mechanics, which fix the control of blows in a fight on only one opponent. Therefore, in mass races for control of the map, the winners will be the scoundrels, the attackers colluding, for example, four against one. But on the other hand, this is exactly how things are in a real fight. In addition, this feature opens up the need for some kind of planning of attacks during mass skirmishes, cohesion and team spirit.

Since we’re talking about mechanics. It is also unique and interesting here. The area around the player is divided into top, right and left. Using the mouse (in the case of a PC, of course), he transfers the force to the zone needed at the moment. It carries out the desired attack or parry. Strikes can be roughly divided into strong and weak, although there are many options.

And each of the four heroes from the three available factions is unique. In this regard, an experienced For Honor player will eventually become a professional ax Viking or samurai — a master of the sword. This would be great if the game had perfect balance. But alas, while we observe that in many circumstances a certain fighter has a serious advantage.

Summary. Fresh, interesting. Not without problems in balance, but there are certainly many patches and updates ahead. For players tired of ordinary shooters and MOBAs with a lot of magic, this will be a great new entertainment.

Graphics

This is clearly a strong point of the game. It is already called the best game from Ubisoft in visual terms. And indeed. The developers did not skimp on polygons, high-quality shadows, reflections, and detailed vegetation. All this is at a high level and pleases the eye. Excellent medieval design.

Despite the already mentioned “cranberry-ness”, the world looks stylish and designed with soul. The only downside is that there are numerous animation bugs. They are often found even in single-player games, let alone multiplayer. Although in the heat of battle there is no time for them at all. It is also worth noting the excellent optimization.

Bottom line — everything is great here. Some bugs will most likely be fixed by patches and updates. Beautiful graphics with an interesting design are the key to a successful project.

Review for honor. clash of swords (video)

For Honor became popular almost from the moment of its announcement. Could this medieval action movie about knights, samurai and Vikings live up to the expectations placed on it?

For Honor – game review |

For Honor
is the brainchild of Jason Vandenberg
, who acted as the project manager. The very idea of the game appeared 15 years ago, when Jason first became interested in the German school of fencing. This is a historical style of fighting, actively used by the Holy Roman Empire, lasting until the Renaissance and early modern times. Some of the main principles of the school were speed, a small amount of luck and tactical planning for almost every strike. Moreover, the complexity of the theoretical part was often overshadowed by the importance of practice. This was real art, and adherents of this school were a kind of artists who painted their canvases with the blood of fallen enemies. Encouraged by all this, Jason thought it would be a good idea to adapt real-life sword swinging into a game format.

Злодейка собственной персоной. Пугает не только средневековой хоккейной маской, но и кровожадностью.

The villainess herself. It frightens not only with its medieval hockey mask, but also with its bloodthirstiness.

Jason’s obsession with making a game about feints with swords grew more and more new ideas and details, and then entered the scene
Ubisoft
, deciding that this concept could bring good profits, and gave the green light to develop the game. You can see for yourself what came of it.

For Honor – game review |

Although
For Honor
By all indications, it is a multiplayer game; it also has a story campaign, designed for both single play and lively co-op. Structurally, the adventures of the Vikings, samurai and knights are divided into three chapters — one for each of the factions — during which the writers tried to reveal some of the characters and their motivations, introduced the player to the main and secondary characters, and also tried to show the scale of the unfolding mess started by one strong and an independent lady.

Визуально игра выглядит довольно неплохо, причем на всех платформах.

Visually, the game looks pretty good, and on all platforms.

Don’t expect any revelations from the script. The story is stitched with white threads and is replete with meaningless and empty dialogues, often needed only to once again show the coolness of this or that character, or simply to dilute the silence in game videos. Thus, almost at the very beginning of the game, Justiciar Cross, who is in charge of the siege of the fortress, suggests that the commander stop shedding the blood of his people and solve everything with a duel, which causes him almost hysteria and panic, which he does not even think of hiding. A little later, the game’s antagonist, Apollyon, will talk about wolves and sheep, skewering helpless knights on her huge sword.

Nevertheless, the single-player campaign is still memorable for its dashing horse chases, spectacular sieges of several fortresses using giant rams and siege weapons, and even a game of tag with a giant elephant.

Жаль, что осады проходят уж слишком быстро.

It’s a pity that the sieges are passing too quickly.

Speaking of Apollyon. The main villain does not claim to be the best, but she copes with her direct responsibilities quite well. She is easily able to instill fear even in her allies and show her enemies that getting involved with her is more expensive for themselves, and her stupid and senseless at first glance plan to ignite a large-scale war of everyone with everyone closer to the end of the game will not seem so stupid. Well, maybe just a little.

The main message is that war is bad, but inevitable. It is the nature of stupid people to destroy each other and bathe in rivers of blood, and there is no escape from it.

Campaign in
For Honor
rather, it is needed to introduce the player to various game classes, show all their strengths and weaknesses, and also teach the basics of gameplay. She does it just perfectly. The tasks are structured in such a way as to fully reveal the potential of each hero. Here you have the Holders, storming enemy fortresses as part of a huge army and chopping enemy generals into goulash; deliverers, quietly sneaking behind enemy lines to cause sabotage and rip open the bellies of bearded barbarians; or Kensei hunting enemies in bamboo thickets and punishing cowards. Unfortunately, the developers couldn’t figure out how to use all the dozen available heroes in the campaign, leaving several interesting bunglers out of work.

Викинги за привычным делом — набегами, убийствами и разграблениями.

Vikings doing their usual thing — raids, murders and plunders.

The campaign also teaches the player to use environmental elements such as spikes protruding from walls that cause accidents, boiling geysers, steep cliffs and much more, as well as the importance of teamwork. It’s just a pity that the artificial intelligence of your comrades sometimes forces you to close the game to hell and commit hara-kiri to yourself. Degenerates easily forget about the goals of the mission and it doesn’t cost them anything to suddenly stop and start counting crows while, say, a shugoku is processing you into mince with its kanabo. Or sometimes they interfere when their help is absolutely not required. But most of all they like to finish off enemies with whom you have been fussing for a dishonestly long time.

But, as already mentioned, the campaign in
For Honor
is, rather, just a long training task designed to harden the player for the unforgiving multiplayer mode. At the very beginning of the game, you are asked to choose one of three factions, and then make your overwhelming contribution to the common good cause of wringing out territories from the other factions. It is worth noting that the choice of faction does not affect the available heroes. So, playing as knights, you can easily try yourself in the role of Nobushi or a bearded barbarian with a wooden shield. There are three sides in the game: Vikings, samurai and knights. Each side offers a choice of four heroes, each of which is unique in its own way, although it shares some features with its counterparts from other factions. There are among them real heroes, clad in heavy armor and able to easily withstand several blows to the head with a two-handed ax, but do not boast of agility; there are dexterous, fast and flimsy killers, playfully evading enemy attacks, but at the same time inflicting considerable damage; There are also more balanced classes that can easily play both defense and attack.

Это далеко не самая масштабная схватка с силами врага.

This is far from the largest battle with enemy forces.

Multiplayer, in which players will spend the lion’s share of time, is divided into five game modes: “Territory Capture”, “Duel”, “Slaughter”, “Extermination” and “Skirmish”. The simplest are “Duel” (1 on 1 fight) and “Slaughter” (4 on 4 mash), in which players only need to kill each other as quickly as possible. But these modes can rightfully be considered the most interesting, since it is in them that the game reveals itself to the fullest. You need to actively use the elements of the environment, monitor the state of endurance of the selected character and try not to let yourself be pinned into a corner, planning your actions several steps ahead.

“Territory Capture” can be considered an equally interesting mode, in which players, mixed with puny extra soldiers, fight for control of several points on the map. The only pity is that all the fun of participating in a brutal battle can quickly disappear due to the cluttered user interface. Dozens of soldiers flashing before your eyes make it very difficult to effectively fight with other players, almost completely obscuring your view.

Простые солдатики выступают в качестве пушечного мяса, которое от героев не спасают даже щиты.

Simple soldiers act as cannon fodder, which even shields cannot save from the heroes.

Players’ victories also have an impact on the overall world map, helping the selected faction to capture new territories. The incentive for players to give their all is provided by numerous gadgets and stylish clothes, which serve as a reward for their feasible contribution to the common cause. In addition to outrageous new items, players can use real money or hard coins to buy various equipment that affects various qualities of the selected hero — speed and attack power, endurance, and so on. Fortunately, these things do not greatly affect the gameplay, because the outcome of the battle still depends on the straightness of the player’s hands, and are only available in 4v4 modes.

Main complaints about
For Honor
The system for selecting opponents and comrades in multiplayer mode can be considered completely broken. The game often pitted us against a team of AI-controlled bobbleheads against a team of other players, with predictable results, of course. Or, even worse, the game threw us into a team of useless crustaceans, completely unfamiliar with the game mechanics, who more often bathed in boiling geysers and drowned in swamps than helped in any way.

Despite some shortcomings from the developers, For Honor is a good game with good potential for growth. We think that after a few patches it will be exactly as it was originally intended. For now, this is simply proof that even bold and controversial ideas can bring positive results.

Game review

After a terrible cataclysm, three factions of history’s fiercest warriors clash in a great battle for survival. Become a brave knight, a fierce Viking or a deadly samurai and fight for the honor of your faction. Wreak havoc on the battlefield in this stunningly fast-paced game where skill is everything in bloody battles.

Since its release in February 2020, the game has evolved with constant updates and improvements. With the advent of dedicated servers, gameplay has become more stable, and with new training modes, players can go from student to master, while receiving rewards.

More details.

Gameplay is based on For Honor’s unique melee combat system, the Art of War, where you change stance by pointing your weapon left, right, or up to bypass your opponent’s defenses and parry their attacks.

Play the story campaign alone or with friends, or choose from 6 multiplayer modes for 1v1, 2v2 or 4v4 battles. In For Honor, you’ll need to be quick on your feet in combat and pay careful attention to your surroundings and enemy behavior to capture territory and defeat other players (and fight your way through AI-controlled ranks).

At the beginning of the game you will have to swear allegiance to one of the factions, but you can choose any of the 18 available heroes for battles. Each of them demonstrates a certain fighting style. Do you want to deal significant damage to everyone who happens to be nearby? Your choice is Shugoki. Do you like agile heroes who can confuse your opponent by delivering a lot of quick strikes? Try deliverer or orochi. And thanks to the training mode, you will have the opportunity to experiment and find out which of the heroes suits you best.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack does not match hit music that can be sold separately. But it’s still there and doesn’t irritate, which is good. Drums, pipes, string motifs, all in a medieval style. This is what you expect from such a setting

System requirements for honor

The game has relatively lenient system requirements.

Minimum:

  • processor Intel Core i3-550 or AMD Phenom II X4 955;
  • video card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX660/GTX750ti/GTX950/GTX1050 (2GB VRAM or more) | AMD Radeon HD6970/HD7870/R9 270/R9 370/RX460 (2GB VRAM or more);
  • RAM: 4 GB;
  • OS: Windows 7, 8.1, 10 (x64);
  • hard disk space: 30 GB.

Recommended:

  • processor: Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-6350;
  • video card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX680/GTX760/GTX970/GTX1060 (2 GB VRAM or more) | AMD Radeon R9 280X/R9 380/RX470 (2 GB VRAM or more);
  • OS: Windows 7, 8.1, 10 (x64);
  • RAM: 8 GB or more
  • hard disk space: 30 GB.

Plot for honor

For Honor is a multiplayer game at its core. However, it also has a single-player story campaign that is 7-8 hours long. Quite weak, but very necessary in terms of training. The barrier to entry into the game is quite high and the mechanics of battles need to be mastered, otherwise the player will have to be a yellow-noob for a long time. It is highly recommended that you do not skip this part.

In principle, there is no need to talk about any historical authenticity here. This is already obvious in a universe where Vikings, samurai and knights live next door. Things are no better with the recreated types of the mentioned factions. Here it’s more like cranberry, a set of stereotypes. And even then, they are not strictly followed. There are dark Vikings, female knights and so on. This is all clear.

The plot itself tells about this. The main antagonist is a female warrior named Apoleon. We won’t see her face without a mask. Confident in the abomination and wolf essence of all people, she wants, through conspiracies and wars, to achieve an endless conflict between the Vikings, knights and samurai. The player will experience events from the perspective of different characters:

  • samurai Arodia;
  • knight’s guard;
  • Viking Holder.

In addition to the three main ones, there are a number of heroes who will be played for a short time. The plot is more interesting due to the variety of gameplay. There will be horse chases, massacres, cargo escorts, etc. The story is told through simple cutscenes, which you will eventually skip in order to quickly move on to the action. All this will give the player valuable experience and full readiness to enter multiplayer.

To sum it up, the story is not very interesting to follow, but it is fun to play. Its main task is to reveal the gameplay capabilities of each of the fighters of the existing factions. And he does it well. Therefore, the rating is quite satisfactory.

Conclusion

Most gaming publications give it high marks, and for good reason. This is a truly high-quality, expensive project aimed at future development. Personal forecast: he will have a long life with interesting DLC. Unless, of course, sales fail, which is doubtful given the current hype. Recommended for everyone.
