Honor 10i, honor 8x and honor 10 lite

We visited the Honor 10i smartphone, which brings very little new in comparison with last year’s Honor 8X and the recent Honor 10 lite. All three work on the same platform — this is an 8-core Kirin 710 processor complete with 4 GB of RAM.

Honor 8X, one of the best in the budget segment, surpasses current models in screen size — 6.5 inches versus 6.21 inches for Honor 10i and the “light” version. The same applies to the battery capacity: it is obvious that the battery will fit more in a large case. Therefore, the Honor 10i has a 3400 mAh battery, while the Honor 8X has a 3750 mAh battery. However, this does not play a noticeable role.

The hardware has undergone minimal modernization, so no USB Type-C — only microUSB, only hardcore. Charging is fast for the interface, but it takes a while to fill the battery completely.

What is the main difference between Honor 10i and its predecessors? Firstly, the amount of internal memory is 128 GB. Secondly, a more advanced camera — there is a triple main photo module in a 24 8 2 megapixel layout, as well as a 32 megapixel camera.

We’ll start synthetic tests with the popular AnTuTu Benchmark and 3DMark, the result was obtained in “performance mode” (the corresponding icon is visible in the status bar).

The temperature conditions in the performance tests are very comfortable; the stress test raises the temperature of the battery and processor a little higher — up to 39° C and 45° C, respectively.

In all both battery tests, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC were turned on, screen brightness was at medium level, and performance was at normal.

First, the Geekbench results — the phone lasted 6 hours and 47 minutes.

In normal use for me, the phone lasted 3 days, during which time I used: 100 minutes of calls, more than two hours of online music (connecting to the car system via Bluetooth) and about the same amount of time spent on social networks and instant messengers with Internet connection via Wi-Fi or 3G/4G.

The smartphone has a single-band Wi-Fi module, however, even in the air congested by neighboring networks, the connection is stable and does not cause any complaints.

Appearance

The back surface of the smartphone is plastic, but, like the Honor 10 Lite, the plastic is not simple, but multi-layered. Sharp objects can scratch it, but since the lid is iridescent, it will be extremely difficult to notice.

Honor 10i has a microUSB connector with OTG function, that is, the flash drive is recognized as a removable disk. For some reason, it has recently become fashionable to be loudly indignant if the connector is not Type-C. I don’t see and don’t understand what the problem is here. Also in the photo below you can clearly see the pasted factory film:

The speaker grille was placed on the upper end of the device, but it is implemented conveniently, and you don’t have to look for how to properly attach the phone to your ear, as is the case with Meizu 15 Lite, which I could not get used to and end up talking on device or through a headset or speakerphone.

Impressions

Honor 10 Lite and Honor 10i are practically twins, so their impressions are almost the same. These are beautiful, fast smartphones with a modern design and a good screen. They will delight their owner.

But the main question is: is it worth overpaying 5 thousand rubles for 3 camera modules.

If you really want a wide-angle camera, it’s worth it. It is also worth noting that Honor 10i uses a more advanced algorithm for processing night photos.

I would choose Honor 10 Lite for purchase, since it turned out to be much more practical in terms of price/quality ratio. To make me want to pay 5 thousand more and buy 10i, an additional photo module is not enough. I would be tempted if the screen was a little brighter (more than 500 nits) and Wi-Fi 2.4/5.0 ac was added.

Considering the difficult situation in which Huawei has found itself, one might wonder whether it is necessary to buy the company’s smartphones at all. In my opinion, if you wanted a smartphone like this, then you can safely take it, since all devices activated before the US ban came into force will work calmly and well with Google services, and I’m even convinced that they will continue to receive all updates.

The idea is quite simple. Huawei has put a lot of effort and effort into climbing to the top of the smartphone market. And now they have two options. The first is to say “oh, that’s it” and abandon all your clients, explaining to them that the USA is bad and nothing can be done. The second option is to take maximum care of your clients, showing that they are not afraid of any sanctions.

The first option is a road to nowhere, because no one will ever buy a smartphone from Huawei on any operating system. Everyone will remember the situation that happened. I think Huawei understands this and will make every effort to update firmware and security updates to show how much they care about their customers.

I also won’t be surprised that Huawei will offer all owners of its smartphones to switch to a new, proprietary version of the operating system.

Impressions, competitors

What I liked about the Honor 10i smartphone:

• beautiful design;
• convenient plastic case;
• has NFC;
• good system performance;
• there is a wide-angle camera.

Disadvantages:

• Micro USB port;
• hybrid card tray;
• no notification LED;
• no Wi-Fi 5 GHz;
• no gyroscope;
• there is no stabilization when shooting video;
• average camera in all respects.

Controversial issues:

• The microphone hole is dangerously close to the SIM tray.

Honor 10i is a very controversial model. When developing it, the manufacturer did not hesitate to save money, which is manifested in the absence of many functions, the presence of which has become a constant for a good modern smartphone. And if the new product was offered for 15 thousand rubles, there would be a different conversation, but the presence of a wide-angle camera alone does not justify all the above sacrifices at a price of 20 thousand.

Perhaps the lack of dual-band Wi-Fi, a notification indicator, or an outdated Micro USB port are not critical for most users. But why these compromises, if for the same money, or even cheaper, you can get much more interesting devices.

Huawei’s range includes the Honor 8X, which, despite the lack of a wide-angle module, takes even better photographs than the 10i. It’s also worth paying attention to Redmi Note 7 (top camera for 15 thousand, Type-C, better battery life and higher performance, glass body) and ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M2 (excellent battery life, pure Android, NFC and good cameras).

If having a wide-angle camera is essential, the Samsung Galaxy A30 or Galaxy A50 would be better options. The latter costs similar money and is superior to the Honor 10i in all respects — from a cooler SuperAMOLED display with a built-in fingerprint scanner, to a separate 3-card tray, a larger battery, a Type-C port and support for fast charging. Well, we recommend considering purchasing Honor 10i when it becomes cheaper by 4-5 thousand rubles.

Externally, Honor 10i remains faithful to the chosen “color policy” of the brand (and not only Honor). A gradient moving from bottom to top, vertical lines visible in certain lighting. Whether it is beautiful or not is a matter of taste. However, it is obvious that it is nice and much better than boring monochrome cases.

The rest is a complete classic. On the right side there is a volume rocker and a power button, on the bottom there is a speaker grill, a hole for the main microphone, a microUSB connector and a 3.5 jack for headphones. The left side is empty, there is a tray for two SIM cards (or a SIM card and a memory card), and an additional microphone is on the top.

The fingerprint scanner is on the rear panel, due to which the screen occupies a large area of ​​​​the front side of the Honor 10i. The front camera is hidden in a “droplet” at the top of the display, and the earpiece is hidden behind a thin strip on the edge between the top end and the screen.

One of the noticeable nuances is the “breathable” back panel made of multilayer (and therefore iridescent) plastic; the material bends barely noticeably when pressed. It looks like glass, which adds points to the design.

Design and materials

The smartphone is supplied with a 5V/2A charging adapter, a USB cable, a paper clip for removing the card tray, a silicone case and a film that is glued to the screen of the device out of the box.

Honor 10i is like two peas in a pod like other Huawei smartphones released in 2022, and if you put several different devices side by side, only the most devoted fans of the brand will be able to determine which one is which. Whether this is good or bad is up to you to judge, but despite the secondary design, the device looks nice.

The phone is made entirely of plastic, which tries to imitate glass due to its glossy finish. Visually it turns out, but the device does not cool your hand pleasantly, and for its size it is very light. Plastic has undeniable advantages — it does not slip in your hands, and the likelihood that such a device will survive a fall without consequences is higher. But the glossy surface will be covered with scratches and abrasions every time it comes into contact with the keys in your pocket.

Let’s go through the arrangement of functional elements. At the top end of the case there is a hybrid tray for two Nano SIM cards, one of which can be sacrificed in favor of a MicroSD memory card. A noise reduction microphone is located in close proximity to it.

The holes look similar and are almost symmetrical to each other; why Huawei started doing this in their latest smartphones is unclear. It would be interesting to know statistics on calls to service centers from users who inadvertently stuck a paperclip into the microphone hole when trying to remove a card slot.

The use of a Micro-USB port in a smartphone for 20 thousand raises even more questions, while Type-C is already available in more affordable smartphones not only from Chinese manufacturers, but also from the same Samsung. The disappointment is a little brightened up by the presence of a 3.5 mm headphone jack, which, together with the speaker grille, is located at the bottom end of the device.

On the back cover we find the main pride of the Honor 10i — a triple camera, under which there is a dual LED flash. The fingerprint scanner is located in a convenient place for medium-sized palms. The fingerprint sensor works quickly, and EMUI allows you to assign additional functions to it, such as opening the notification shade or flipping through images in the gallery.

The smartphone also supports face unlock using the front camera. During the day, it can be a full-fledged replacement for a finger scanner (in terms of speed, but not security level). But at night, face recognition works an order of magnitude slower, sometimes with errors, and sometimes does not work at all — it depends on whether the screen brightness is enough to highlight the face in specific conditions.

Among the unmentioned shortcomings, we note the absence of an LED notification indicator. As for the build quality, there are no complaints about it. The case is well made, the back cover does not creak or bend when pressed. In the hand, despite its rather large size, the Honor 10i fits perfectly. The plastic case is grippy and tactilely pleasant; there is no particular desire to hide the phone in a case.

Display

Honor 10i LTPS has a 6.21-inch screen with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels, a 19.5:9 ratio, and a density of 415 ppi.

The screen has a teardrop-shaped cutout for the camera. It doesn’t catch your eye, but you can always hide it by selecting a black fill in the settings.

Maximum brightness is 400 – 450 nits. When measuring the Spyder4, I got a figure of 400 nits in the “Bright” screen mode. In reviews on other resources, values ​​around 440 nits are found. In general, this brightness is enough to comfortably use a smartphone outdoors. Unfortunately, the photo does not convey it, but you can see the screen perfectly.

The advantages of the display also include the absence of PWM screen flickering even at minimum brightness. But in general, there is nothing remarkable about this, since now most new devices use other backlight mechanisms.

The screen has two operating modes — normal and bright. Settings allow you to select the temperature and customize the screen to your taste.

Honor 10i has an auto-brightness function. I didn’t like that it was hidden in the “Display” section of the menu, meaning there was no quick access to it from the curtain.

Out of curiosity, I would like to note the ability to adjust the screen resolution. This can be a high resolution of 2340 by 1080 or a low resolution of 1560 by 720 pixels. And there is a “smart” resolution, that is, the smartphone itself will reduce the screen resolution when needed to reduce power consumption.

Adding a picture

The simplest way to add to your own picture requires the following steps:

1. go to the smartphone settings and open the section dedicated to device security;
2. go to the passwords subsection and select “unlock journal”;
3. after which all you have to do is go to subscriptions and open the album “added by me”;
4. The last step is to click the “ ” (“add”) icon and select the desired image in the galleries and folders (you should first download it from the site or an external source).

As a result, the selected file will be available for use.

Images have been deleted from the magazine, how can I get them back?

Deleted pictures can only be recovered using third-party programs. And in order to prevent this from happening in the future, mark the photos you like with a like, and they will not disappear anywhere.

The main camera consists of three 24 8 2 MP modules. The last 2 megapixel sensor is used exclusively to determine the depth of field when shooting portraits, so in the process of photographing we have access to two cameras with different focal lengths — standard and wide-angle.

By default, photos with the main camera are taken at 12 MP resolution; increased resolution must be enabled manually, but it is not available when AI processing mode is activated. In good lighting, 24 MP gives a slight gain in detail, but this can only be appreciated by enlarging the image; on the phone screen the pictures look approximately the same.

The wide-angle module allows you to fit much more space into the frame, which makes the photography process more interesting. When cropping, there is a noticeable difference in detail between the cameras, but this is typical for all available smartphones with wide-angle modules. In the same Galaxy A30 and A50, the wide sensor also takes worse photographs than the main sensor.

In low light, the Honor 10i takes very mediocre pictures. Due to aggressive noise reduction algorithms, the image becomes soapy and all detail is lost. Here it makes sense to use a special night mode, which compensates for the lack of stabilization and allows you to take clearer pictures.

Overall, if you look at photos solely on the phone screen, as most users will do, the 10i camera can be called normal. However, in the price category up to 20 thousand rubles there are many devices that take significantly better pictures.

The selfie camera does its job well; it has an impressive 32 MP resolution and fixed focus.

The above also applies to video shooting on Honor 10i. Here the problem of the lack of any stabilization is added to the mediocre dynamic range. Recording is carried out in a maximum resolution of 1080p with a frame rate of 30 or 60 fps. You can shoot with both the main and wide-angle cameras. One of the positive aspects is the high speed of autofocus.

Image quality

The cameras here have been improved compared to previous models. The main camera is twenty-four megapixels, the wide-angle is eight megapixels, the third sensor is two megapixels, it is needed to create portrait photographs. The quality of shooting is at the highest level. In any lighting, you get photos that you will want to post on social networks.

The front camera is the most sophisticated here. Thirty-two megapixels. The front camera is very clear and takes great pictures. Good color rendition.

Of the minuses: this smartphone cannot shoot video in 4K resolution. You can record a video, but the quality will not be the highest. There is no stabilization while walking, the picture will shake.

Another small plus of this model is the FM radio. You can connect headphones and enjoy your favorite radio stations. If you do not use this application, you can delete it.

Communication features

The smartphone supports 2 nano-SIM cards. One can be replaced with a microSD card up to 512 GB. I have no complaints about the voice quality during calls. There are also no complaints about the operation of LTE on the device.

Speaking about Honor 10 Lite, I complained that it has Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz b/g/n. Unfortunately, there are no changes to the Honor 10i. Considering that they are asking 5 thousand more for a smartphone, they could probably improve it.

GPS works great. Fast “cold” start, the smartphone sees many satellites.

The smartphone has NFC — and this is great news, it can be used to check and top up the balance of the Troika card:

Competitors

The Honor 10i smartphone has a lot of competitors. First up is the Honor 10 Lite, which I highly recommend checking out.

The second significant competitor is the entire A-series of smartphones from Samsung. For example, Samsung Galaxy A50 in a 4/64 GB combination. The same cameras can be mentioned as an advantage. The A50 also has three photo modules: 25 MP (f/1.7) 5 MP (f/2.2) 8 MP (f/2.2) (wide-angle and regular cameras, depth-of-field camera). There is also a 4000 mAh battery, and not 3400 mAh, like the Honor 10i.

If you’re tired of Samsung and Huawei, then why not pay attention to the Motorola G7 Plus?

In terms of technical characteristics, this smartphone is inferior to both Samsung and Honor — it has two photo modules (16 5 MP) and a 3000 mAh battery. However, firstly, it has the most powerful fast charging, and secondly, various classic Motorola features, such as the ability to choose to leave only a certain color in the frame and advanced gesture control.

The protective case slightly mutes the bright colors, but is noticeably less slippery in the hand than the phone without it.

When you see bunches of Huawei/Honor smartphones in each price segment, you always remember an indecent joke about two bulls looking down from a hill at a herd of cows, ending with the phrase: “No, we will slowly go down the hill and cover the entire herd.” Also, Huawei, slowly but back, has expanded into all price segments, thus offering options for every taste and color.

Honor 10i has exactly the same positioning as Honor 10 Lite. This is a smartphone for active young people who want a fast device with all the bells and whistles, but don’t want to overpay. But if 10 Lite for 14,990 is for those who are more modest, then Honor 10i is for technology lovers, since the smartphone has 3 cameras.

Productivity

The smartphone runs on the Hisilicon Kirin 710 chipset, which has 8 cores, 4 high-performance and 4 more efficient and economical ones (4×2.2 GHz Cortex-A73 4×1.7 GHz Cortex-A53), as well as Mali-G51 MP4 graphics.

Hisilicon Kirin 710 is Huawei’s own development. It’s tempting to confuse it with the Snapdragon 710, but that would be a mistake. Kirin 710 will be simpler, and it is more likely a competitor to the Snapdragon 660. It, unlike the Snapdragon 710 (10 nm), is made using 12 nm technology. Accordingly, Snapdragon’s other technologies are a little more modern, for example, the cores are a combination of Cortex A75 and A55.

The smartphone has 4 GB of RAM, the latest version of Android 9.0 and Huawei’s own shell – EMUI 9.0.1 (also the latest version).

As you understand, the performance of Honor 10i should not differ from 10 Lite. And in general this is true. However, I would like to remind you that 10 Lite was an engineering sample, and then I complained that the chipset had a throttling effect (that is, performance decreases when heated).

Performance and OS

The Kirin 710 processor is responsible for the performance of Honor 10i. This is a 12-nanometer eight-core chipset operating at a clock frequency of 1.7-2.2 GHz. The processor was introduced in mid-2022 and has since been used in a good dozen different smartphones from Huawei/Honor, having proven itself to be the best. The 10i has 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, of which 111 GB is available to the user. The storage can be expanded with a MicroSD card up to 512 GB.

Honor 10i feels quite confident in games. Heavy projects like Asphalt 9, WoT and PUBG with stable FPS are comfortable to play on medium graphics settings, you can also use high ones, but after 30-40 minutes drops in frame rate begin. The maximum heating of the case under load does not exceed 42 degrees.

Editing the shift mode

So, setting automatic change on the lock screen is quite simple. This confirms the method described above. But even here, some people feel dissatisfied. For example, they don’t like the pictures offered. Fortunately, it is possible to make adjustments to this mode:

• Go to the list of applications installed on your smartphone. And select “Gallery” in it;
• View the list of available albums. You need to go to the one called “Screen Unlock”;
• This folder stores pictures that are used to automatically replace wallpaper. You can view them, delete those that do not suit you;
• Need others? No problem — just throw them in this folder.

Another important question — where do the images appear in this folder? The fact is that the operating system of a mobile device periodically goes online and downloads them from a special server. If this does not suit you, then this function can be deactivated:

Controlling the lock screen on Huawei honor

Important to know: The lock log is a phone screen with a beautiful photo, the current time, a greeting message and, possibly, a notification from one of the applications.

To switch to the Lock Log management mode, you need to swipe up from the bottom edge of the lock screen. When swiping in other directions, you will be prompted to enter a password to unlock the device.

In the Lock Log management mode, you can scroll through the Lock Log images by swiping right or left.

At the bottom of the screen there are two rows of icons, of which:

• the lowest row of icons are the “quick menu” icons;
• The second row of icons is the Lock Log management icons.
