Mi 10T Pro looks bright. The smartphone really turned out to be very pleasant. The device stands out, looks unique and immediately catches the eye. A powerful, bright screen, a matte back, and an unusual camera block immediately make it clear that this is a flagship product.

Let’s go through the main elements.

The smartphone has a matte back cover made of Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Xiaomi in promotional materials says that it feels like ceramic to the touch. In the photo it may seem that the back shimmers, but it does not have any gradient. It is monocolor, but the light plays in such a way that it creates the illusion of a gradient.

There is a fingerprint scanner on the right side. There are no complaints about his work. Clear operation, you can touch several fingers. It’s obvious why the scanner was placed this way. The screen technology (IPS LCD) did not allow it to be placed under the screen, and if the scanner were placed on the back, then at the end of 2020 it would immediately look like a boring and outdated solution.

There are no controls on the left side. Only 3 antennas.

Microphones and an IR port are located at the top end.

Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro: лучший смартфон 2020 года от Xiaomi

At the bottom there is a speaker and a slot for SIM cards. The tray is designed for 2 nano-SIM cards. The smartphone does not support memory cards. This is an interesting trend that is typical for all flagships. In my opinion, there are two reasons for this. Firstly, despite common misconceptions, manufacturers do not earn very much money from flagships.

Perhaps I’ll reveal a secret, but in the smartphone market, only Apple has a 30% margin from a smartphone, Samsung — about 15%, and other manufacturers — around 4-8%. However, selling flagships is more difficult than ordinary smartphones, since you need to convince the consumer to part with a significant amount of money.

Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro: лучший смартфон 2020 года от Xiaomi

The second reason is that modern flagships have super advanced specifications that require certain standards. For example, recording 8K video requires high-speed drives. Consumers around the world are prone to petty savings, and instead of an expensive card, they will buy nonsense for 3 kopecks. Then they will complain that it doesn’t work well, but they will not blame themselves, but the manufacturer.

The smartphone comes with an antibacterial case, the consumer properties of which are certified.

And the screen has the same antibacterial film. Also certified. Well, what can I say? Marketing and trends are everything. In any case, it won’t be superfluous. By the way, the film is good. You can even shoot shooters without taking them off.

All the differences between xiaomi mi 10, mi 10t and mi 10t pro: which one to choose?

Yesterday there was a presentation of the Xiaomi Mi 10T series of smartphones, which became the brand’s second pair of flagships in 2020 (we don’t take the top-end Poco, Redmi and Black Shark into account). As we learned, unlike the Mi 10 series, the Mi 10T will arrive in Russia in full, which means that users will have a difficult choice which of the trio of similar models to choose. In this material we will compare all the characteristics of these devices and try to determine which one is preferable.

First, let’s determine the difference between Mi 10T and Mi 10T Pro. And it turns out to be minimal. The most important thing is that the older version has a 108-megapixel main Samsung Bright HMX camera sensor with optical image stabilization, while the younger version has a 64-megapixel Sony IMX682 without OIS. Additionally, the Mi 10T has a 6GB RAM variant, while the Mi 10T Pro has a 256GB ROM variant. In general, that’s all! No seriously! The Mi 10T Pro also comes in Aurora Blue color and weighs a full two grams more. It is unlikely that these two details will influence the user’s choice.

The differences between Mi 10 and Mi 10T are much more significant. We will draw a parallel with the Mi 10T Pro due to the identical camera module. Perhaps, let’s start with him. So, the 108-megapixel main Samsung Bright HMX sensor in both cases is complemented by a 13-megapixel wide sensor with a 123-degree capture angle and f/2.4 aperture (it looks like these are the same modules). However, the Mi 10 camera comes with two 2-megapixel lenses for macro and portraits, while the Mi 10T Pro has only a 5-megapixel macro camera. Unfortunately, the characteristics of the latter do not match those we saw in the Poco F2 Pro ( our review
), so its implementation is still in question, which means that it is difficult to give someone an advantage before testing. On paper, a 5-megapixel macro seems more attractive, you must agree. A matter of taste — block design:

The most dramatic difference is the screen. In both cases, we are talking about a 6.67″ panel with Full HD resolution (adjusted for aspect ratio: 19.5:9 for Mi 10 and 20:9 for Mi 10T Pro), both protected by Gorilla Glass 5. Meanwhile, Mi 10 uses an OLED panel with a refresh rate of 90 Hz, and its current opponent has a 144 Hz IPS display. placed in the screen, and on the Mi 10T Pro — on the end (in fact, due to the IPS feature and its backlight). An important help should be the AdaptiveSync variable refresh rate technology in the range of 30-144 Hz depending on the content. This should contribute to a higher energy efficiency compared to similar solutions without it. You need to keep in mind the rounded edges of the model of the first half of this year, and it is opposed by a flat panel. In both cases, the 20-megapixel front camera is built into the display, in both of them — in the upper left corner.

An absolute argument in favor of Mi 10 is support for wireless and reverse wireless charging, which the Mi 10T Pro does not have. But the latter has a 220 mAh larger battery (5000 mAh versus 4780 mAh), and wired charging is 10% more powerful (33 W versus 30 W). You also need to pay attention to the stereo speakers: the Mi 10 has two separate speakers, the effectiveness of which we have already found out in our review (although the Mi 10 Pro has them even better), and the Mi 10T Pro has a classic option that uses an earpiece speaker to create stereo.

Other differences are less significant. For example, the Mi 10T series is equipped with UFS 3.1 memory instead of UFS 3.0, the version for Europe includes support for two nanoSIM cards (unlike Mi 10), and the Mi 10 frames are a little smaller, which affects the dimensions and weight (and here again you need to look for the reason in the type of screen applied). You will find a more detailed comparison of characteristics in the table below. As for prices, we can only compare them in euros for now: Mi 10 is 23% more expensive than Mi 10T Pro (150 euros in money). In Russia, Mi 10 costs 69,990 rubles, so the new product can be valued at 50-53 thousand rubles.

So which one should you choose? The Mi 10T will be an unconditional option for those who cannot work with AMOLED or are simply hostile to such screens. For this group of users, the Mi 10T and Mi 10T Pro will be a breath of fresh air in this post-apocalyptic world of flagships with organic crystals, where even Apple has fallen under the onslaught of trends. Newcomers have very few competitors in this field, and Mi 10 is not one of them. All other things being equal (Snapdragon 865, LPDDR5, UFS 3.x, Full HD and, conditionally, cameras), the choice depends on the type of display, as well as the price tag. At the same time, Mi 10 will remain the most technically advanced Xiaomi device on the international market with its wireless charging, in-screen scanner and dedicated second speaker. We will make final conclusions after a full review, where we will see the implementation of the Snapdragon 865 cooling system, and also compare the camera capabilities. Stay in touch!

Screen

The smartphone is equipped with an AMOLED display with a diagonal of 6.67 inches and a resolution of 2340×1080, covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The physical dimensions of the screen are 71×154 mm, the aspect ratio is 19.5:9, dot density — 386 ppi. The frame width around the screen is less than 2mm on the sides, 3mm on the top and 4mm on the bottom.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface that is scratch-resistant. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are better than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2022) screen (hereinafter simply Nexus 7).

The screen of the Xiaomi Mi 10 is noticeably darker (brightness according to photographs is 103 versus 114 for the Nexus 7) and does not have a pronounced tint. The ghosting of reflected objects in the Xiaomi Mi 10 screen is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen.

Due to the smaller number of boundaries (glass/air type) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of intense external illumination, but their repair in the case of cracked external glass is much more expensive, since it is necessary to replace account for the entire screen.

With manual brightness control and full-screen white field display, the maximum brightness value was about 490 cd/m² under normal conditions, and in very bright light it rises to 770 cd/m². You also need to take into account that in this case, the smaller the white area on the screen, the lighter it is, that is, the actual maximum brightness of the white areas will almost always be higher than the specified values.

As a result, given the excellent anti-glare properties, readability during the day in the sun should be at a good level. The minimum brightness value is 2 cd/m², so in complete darkness the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value. There is automatic brightness adjustment based on the light sensor (it is located under the screen in the upper part to the right of the center).

In automatic mode, as the external lighting conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. The operation of this function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider: with it the user can try to set the desired brightness level in the current conditions.

If you do not interfere, then in complete darkness the auto-brightness function reduces the brightness to 3.5 cd/m² (quite low), in an office illuminated by artificial light (approximately 550 lux) it sets it to 115 cd/m² (normal ), and conventionally in direct sunlight the brightness reaches 770 cd/m² (the maximum, which is what is needed).

We slightly increased the brightness in complete darkness and got: in complete darkness 10 cd/m², in an office illuminated by artificial light — 125 cd/m², “in the sun” — 770 cd/m², we were satisfied with this result. It turns out that the auto-brightness function works adequately and allows the user to customize their work to individual requirements.

At any brightness level there is significant modulation with a frequency of 60, 90 or 360 Hz. The figure below shows brightness (vertical axis) versus time (horizontal axis) for several brightness settings. First for 60Hz mode:

It can be seen that at maximum (as “100%” we designated the mode with additional illumination of the light sensor with bright light) and average brightness, the modulation amplitude is not very large, as a result there is no visible flicker. However, with a strong decrease in brightness, modulation appears with a large relative amplitude; its presence can already be seen in a test for the presence of a stroboscopic effect or simply with rapid eye movement.

In the screen settings, you can enable a mode with an increased refresh rate of up to 90 Hz:

In 90Hz mode, scrolling smoothness is noticeably improved. Let’s see if this changes the nature of the modulation:

It can be seen that at high and medium brightness the modulation frequency increased by 1.5 times, and at low brightness the nature of the modulation did not change.

Those who feel that such flickering causes discomfort can try turning on a function called Anti-flicker (in English literature and in the news the name DC Dimming is usually used). Indeed, when this function is turned on, there is no longer any visible flicker at any brightness level. 60Hz mode:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfnfuB0leEA

After enabling this function, only at very low brightness can you notice a slight increase in static noise and a decrease in the amount of gradation. From a practical point of view, the DC Dimming function can be used without restrictions.

This screen uses a Super AMOLED matrix — active matrix organic light-emitting diodes. A full-color image is created using subpixels of three colors — red (R), green (G) and blue (B), but there are half as many red and blue subpixels, which can be referred to as RGBG. This is confirmed by a fragment of a microphotograph:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of microphotographs of screens used in mobile technology.

In the fragment above you can count 4 green subpixels, 2 red (4 halves) and 2 blue (1 whole and 4 quarters), and by repeating these fragments, you can lay out the entire screen without breaks or overlap. For such matrices, Samsung introduced the name PenTile RGBG.

The manufacturer calculates the screen resolution based on the green subpixels; based on the other two it will be two times lower. Of course, there is some unevenness of contrast borders and other artifacts. However, due to the high resolution, they only minimally affect the image quality.

The screen has excellent viewing angles. True, the white color, when deviated even at small angles, acquires a slight blue-green tint, but the black color remains simply black at any angle. It is so black that the contrast setting is not applicable in this case.

For comparison, here are photographs in which the same images are displayed on the screens of Xiaomi Mi 10 and Nexus 7, while the screen brightness is initially set to approximately 200 cd/m², and the color balance on the camera is forced to switch to 6500 K.

White field perpendicular to the screens:

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field (with the exception of darkening and changes in hue towards the curved edges).

And test picture:

The colors on the Xiaomi Mi 10’s screen are oversaturated (note the tomatoes, bananas, napkin and face shade) and the color balance is noticeably different. Let us remind you that the photograph cannot serve as a reliable source of information about the quality of color rendering and is provided only for conditional visual illustration.

In particular, the pronounced reddish tint of the white and gray fields present in photographs of the Xiaomi Mi 10 screen is visually absent when viewed perpendicularly, which is confirmed by hardware tests using a spectrophotometer. The reason is that the spectral sensitivity of the camera sensor does not exactly match this characteristic of human vision.

Note that in this case, the image occupies the height (in landscape orientation of the screen) of the entire area available for image display and extends onto the curved edges of the screen, which leads to darkening and color distortion. Also, in the light, these areas almost always glare, which makes it even more difficult to view images displayed on the entire screen. And even the picture of films with an aspect ratio of 16:9 comes to the bends, which is very disturbing when watching movies.

The photo above was taken for the Auto profile in the screen settings. There are three basic profiles, and in the fourth you can manually select color gamut correction, change the color balance with numerous settings, etc.:

Such an abundance of settings, some of which do the same thing, only in slightly different ways, indicates that the manufacturer absolutely does not understand what the user needs, and in a vain attempt to please everyone, mindlessly copies the solutions of competitors and multiplies the number of settings .

Photo in case of a profile with sRGB coverage:

Saturation is normal, no increase in color contrast is observed.

Now at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen. White field:

The brightness at an angle for both screens has noticeably decreased (to avoid strong darkening, the shutter speed has been increased compared to previous photos), but in the case of Xiaomi Mi 10 the drop in brightness is less. As a result, with formally the same brightness, the Xiaomi Mi 10 screen visually looks much brighter (compared to LCD screens), since you often have to look at the screen of a mobile device from at least a slight angle.

And test picture:

It can be seen that the colors have not changed much on both screens and the brightness of the Xiaomi Mi 10 at an angle is noticeably higher. Switching the state of the matrix elements is almost instantaneous, but at the turn-on edge there may be a step with a width of approximately 17 ms (which corresponds to a screen refresh rate of approximately 60 Hz)

In some conditions, the presence of such a step can lead to (and does) trails behind moving objects. However, dynamic scenes in films on OLED screens are distinguished by high clarity and even some “jerky” movements.

A gamma curve constructed using 32 points with equal intervals based on the numerical value of the shade of gray showed that there is no significant blockage either in the highlights or in the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.39, which is slightly higher than the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve deviates little from the power-law dependence:

Let us recall that in the case of OLED screens, the brightness of image fragments dynamically changes in accordance with the nature of the displayed image — it decreases slightly for generally light images. As a result, the resulting dependence of brightness on hue (gamma curve) most likely does not correspond to the gamma curve of a static image, since the measurements were carried out with sequential display of shades of gray on almost the entire screen.

The color gamut in the case of the default Auto profile is noticeably wider than sRGB, it is almost equal to DCI-P3:

In the case of the Saturated profile, the coverage is even slightly wider:

When selecting the Original color shades profile, the gamut is compressed to the sRGB boundaries:

In the case of the Saturated profile, the spectra of the components are very well separated, which allows for wide coverage:

In the case of the profile Original color shades with large gamut correction, the color components are mixed with each other to a large extent:

Note that on screens with a wide color gamut, without appropriate correction, the colors of regular images optimized for sRGB devices appear unnaturally saturated. Hence the recommendation: in most cases, watching movies, photographs and everything natural is better when choosing the Original color shades profile.

For the sake of experimentation, we selected the sRGB color gamut in the Advanced settings mode and tried to manually adjust the color balance by adjusting the intensities of three colors:

The result is presented in the graphs below, where for comparison the data obtained after selecting the Auto profile is shown. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since color balance there is not very important, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

It can be seen that manual correction brought the color temperature closer to the standard value of 6500 K, and at least on a white field reduced the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE). Let us remind you once again that there is no point in adjusting the screen settings manually; just select the Original color shades profile once and for all.

Of course, there is a mode with reduced intensity of the blue component. Let us recall that, in principle, bright light can lead to disruption of the daily (circadian) rhythm (see the article about the iPad Pro with a 9.7-inch display), but everything can be solved by adjusting the brightness to a comfortable level, and distorting the color balance, reducing the contribution of blue , makes absolutely no sense.

Let’s summarize. The screen has a very high maximum brightness (up to 770 cd/m²) and has excellent anti-glare properties, so the device can be used outdoors even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value (up to 2 cd/m²).

It is acceptable to use a mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works adequately. The advantages of the screen include an effective oleophobic coating, no flicker (when DC Dimming is enabled), support for a mode with a refresh rate of 90 Hz, as well as a color gamut close to sRGB and good color balance (if you choose the right profile).

At the same time, let us recall the general advantages of OLED screens: true black color (if nothing is reflected on the screen), good uniformity of the white field, noticeably less than that of LCD, a drop in image brightness when viewed at an angle. Separately, we note that from the point of view of image quality, curved edges are only harmful, since it distorts the color tone and reduces the brightness at the edges of the picture, and in ambient light conditions it leads to inevitable glare along at least one long side of the screen. However, overall the screen quality is very high.
