Entering the engineering menu on android (command and program)

Not many people know about the existence in the Android OS of a menu with advanced device settings — engineering menu

. And someone knows, but doesn’t know how to enter it and what to do with it.
In this article we will show how to enter the engineering menu and some of its capabilities.

You can enter the engineering menu simply by entering a special command (but I must add that this method does not work on all versions of Android and not on all devices)

Command to enter the engineering menu: *#*#3646633#*#*

им

Also on some versions of Android the command may work *#15963#*
and

*#*#4636#*#*

Immediately after entering, the command should disappear and the engineering menu should open. But on some devices
You will also need to press the “Call” key

If this method does not have any result, you can use an alternative!

And it consists of installing the program (which, by the way, is freely available on Google Play) » Mobileuncle MTK Tools

2.4.0″

им

This program will open access to the engineering menu (that is, it will work similarly to dialing a combination
*#*#3646633#*#*)

There are a great many settings there! There is huge scope for experimentation! Almost EVERYTHING can be debugged and adjusted!

For clarity, let’s briefly look at setting the device’s volume level:

-Go into the program —> select the «Engineer Mode» section

иж

-Next select the section —> «Engineer Mode (MTK)

иж

-Because We are interested in adjusting the sound level, select —> «Audio»

иж

-And voila, the menu we are interested in opens.

иж

Next, you just need to “conjure” with the settings and adjust the device to suit you!

Max Vol — the same for the entire subsection, as a rule, it is set to 150 (you can change 0-160 — it changes if you select the Media item in the subsection).

If in some submenu, for example, Audio — Normal — Sph, the overall level is not available for adjustment, then enter another subsection, for example, Audio — Normal — Media — there you will be able to adjust the overall volume level .

Sub-items:

Sph — volume levels during a telephone conversation,

Mic — microphone sensitivity levels,

Ring — ringer volume,

Media — volume when playing music, movies, and games.

Ring volume levels are set in Audio — LoudSpeaker — Ring

Max Vol = 150

Levels: 120 130 145 160 180 200 (starts to wheeze more)

Phone speaker conversation volume levels in Audio — Normal — Sph

Max Vol = 150

Levels: 100 120 130 135 140 145 150

Microphone conversation volume levels in Audio — Normal — Mic

Levels: 100 172 172 172 172 172 172

Media volume levels are set in Audio — LoudSpeaker — Media

Max Vol = 150 (it is the same for the entire section)

Levels: 110 130 160 190 210 230 250

The same can be configured for the Headphone mode, by analogy:

Speakerphone volume levels are set in Audio — LoudSpeaker — Sph

Max Vol = 150 (it is the same for the entire section)

Levels: 80 100 110 120 130 140 150 (starts to wheeze more)

Now all volumes are adjusted within adequate ranges.

If you are not satisfied with the volume levels, you can set your own values (the higher the value, the greater the volume when adjusting with the volume keys, or the greater the sensitivity of the microphone)

By analogy, you can configure most sections! Experiment!

If you can’t enter the menu

It is quite possible that you will try to enter all the above combinations, but will not get into the engineering menu. This happens on Android 6 and some other fairly recent versions of the operating system. Apparently, the engineering menu is locked, or some specific code is required to call it.

Nowadays, it is difficult to imagine a smartphone that does not have a camera installed. The shooting module has become an integral part of a mobile device, like Wi-Fi or a second SIM card slot. And of course, every user tries to take a good photo using a mobile camera.

Looking at the pictures posted on social networks or blogs, you will notice that even with a high-quality camera it is not always possible to take an equally high-quality photo. Sometimes the reason for this is the human factor — well, in principle, a person is not able to capture a beautiful shot — but most often the matter is that the user ignores or sets the camera settings incorrectly.

You can significantly improve the quality of photos and videos in three ways:

  • Using your own camera settings;
  • Through the engineering menu;
  • Using a special application.

In our article we will give basic tips for improving pictures, and also tell you in detail how to set up the camera on Android.

Before you start setting up your camera, you should understand the basic rules for shooting with a smartphone. By following these recommendations, you will already be halfway to quality photography.

  1. Keep the lens clean. Before shooting, wipe the lens with a soft cloth so that the image is not spoiled by smudges and dust particles that inevitably fall on the lens;
  2. Consider the light. It is extremely important that the subject is well lit. If you are photographing a person or object in a room, do not place it in front of a window so that the photo does not end up with one solid white spot. We’ll talk about how to adjust the camera to the lighting below;
  3. Don’t overuse zoom. Smartphone cameras are usually equipped with a digital enlarger, which greatly distorts the photo. If possible, it is better to come closer to the subject so as not to end up with a similar picture:
  1. Use the flash only for its intended purpose. If photography takes place at dusk, sometimes you can’t do without a flash. In this case, set it to Auto mode. The smartphone itself will “figure out” when it needs to be used. During the day, it’s better to avoid flash altogether:

In order to achieve a good picture, the user needs to set the right combination of camera settings that match the shooting conditions.

Let’s look at the main camera menu items in order:

Exposition. This function determines the amount of light that hits the camera sensor. As a rule, the exposure varies from -3 to 3. If you are shooting in the evening, set the exposure to positive. On a bright sunny day, it is better to reduce the exposure.

Color effect. As a rule, 6 main effects are available in color settings:

  • Monochrome;
  • Sepia;
  • Negative;
  • Underwater;
  • Chalk on a black board;
  • White board.

These effects are useful if you need to add stylization to your photo. For example, for a more atmospheric and dramatic photo, you can turn on monochrome, and sepia will help if you want to take a photo in a retro style:

Shooting mode. Here the setting depends on the time and place of shooting. Use the appropriate modes if you are shooting on the beach, in the snow, in the city during fireworks, photographing a car race or taking night portraits.

White balance. This feature adds warm or cool tones to your photo. The white balance setting depends on the lighting. The photo below shows an example of two shots. The left one is made in the “Shadow” mode, the right one is in the “Incandescent” mode:

If you are not exactly sure which mode to set, it is better to switch to auto balance.

In the image settings, you can adjust the sharpness, hue, saturation, brightness and contrast of the photo. By default, all parameters are set to “Normal”.

Frequency. This parameter determines the flickering frequency of the light source in hertz. To avoid racking your brains over this value, leave the parameter in Auto mode.

The size of pictures is set in megapixels. If your smartphone has a sufficient amount of internal or external memory, it is better not to skimp on the size and set this parameter to the maximum setting as far as the camera allows.

The ISO parameter determines the light sensitivity of the camera sensor. The higher this indicator, the more light will hit the sensor. Therefore, lighting conditions should be taken into account when setting this parameter. In a dark room, the ISO should be set higher, and in bright sunlight, it is better to lower the sensitivity to 100 or 200.

The photo below shows two shots that show extreme ISO values. The left image has a value of 100, the right one has a value of 1600.

Xiaomi engineering menu

Despite the fact that our test Redmi 2 runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, it also has the functionality that interests us. To enter it, you need to tap on the “Kernel version” item several times in a row.

The menu consists of five items:

  1. Automatic Test. Automatic test of all device parameters.
  2. Single Item Test. Each of the 25 tests is taken separately. We will talk about this in detail below.
  3. Test Report. Report on the completed texts and their results.
  4. SW add HW version. Information about the smartphone version, IMEI and other numbers.
  5. Device View. Smartphone hardware data.

Of course, the most interesting item is the Single Item Test, where you can take a huge number of tests.

Let’s immediately make a reservation that in the device we tested there was no way to configure anything — only a functionality test. At the end of each procedure, you need to note its status: successful (success) or not (failed).

  • Key — functionality of physical buttons. Interestingly, it was not possible to complete it successfully, since when checking the power button, the smartphone turns off.
  • Backlight — display brightness.
  • TFlash. Testing a memory card with two results: either everything is fine, or the card is damaged.
  • Bluetooth. Searches for available devices.
  • SIM Card. Test for the presence of SIM cards.
  • Vibration. The gadget vibrates — everything is ok.
  • RTC (Real Time Clock) — operation of the built-in clock.
  • Speaker. Testing the conversational speaker. We didn’t understand how to get through it. We will be grateful if you can tell us in the comments.
  • Receiver. Translated as receiver, receiver, but music plays during testing.
  • Headset. Testing the 3.5mm jack to detect headphones, play sounds, and support headset control buttons.
  • Wi-Fi. Detection of nearby access points. There are no settings.
  • Torch (flashlight): shines / does not shine.
  • The loopback test includes a test of the spoken microphone. First, click Recording, then Playing.
  • LCD. Screen colors.
  • GPS. Detection of available satellites.
  • Gyro (gyroscope). Three parameters — X, Y, Z — change depending on the position of the device in space.
  • G-sensor (Accelerometer). Rotate the gadget in all planes and turn it over. The three parameters should be ok.
  • Proximity Sensor. It is usually located near the speaker and is designed to dim the gadget screen during a conversation, thereby eliminating accidental clicks.
  • Optical and Magnetic Sensor (optical and magnetic sensors) — points we don’t understand, share your knowledge in the comments.

After passing all tests, you can go to the Test Report section. As you can see, our “animal” is in excellent shape and has passed all the tests, which is very pleasing.

True, I don’t know why you might need such a connection. And to transfer the image from the phone screen to the TV, there is a MirrorShare function. The TV must support Miracast technology. Connecting the phone to the TV is done through the “Settings” → “Advanced settings” → “MirrorShare” menu.

The same thing needs to be enabled on the TV. With this method, the image and sound from the phone are duplicated on the TV screen. Supported by TVs with Android version 4 and higher.

Expert opinion

Egor Razumny

I know how to assemble and disassemble computers, laptops, tablets, phones. Sometimes successfully. I have mastered the skills of diagnosing breakdowns using Google and Yandex.

I tried to display a photo from my smartphone gallery. Strangely, the image seemed to be trying to adjust itself every couple of seconds. That is, there was a characteristic ripple. I haven’t tested the videos. I would be glad to receive feedback from users, I would like to know if it’s just me or everyone who has this problem.

Adjusting screen brightness using a standard set of tools

To get to the profile menu, you need to take only two steps:

  • The first is to find in the icons the one that visually resembles a gear. Click on it;
  • Second, in the proposed list, click on the section called “Screen”.

What can be changed or adjusted here:

  • Set automatic or custom brightness. For the first option, it is enough that there is a checkmark next to the word “Auto”. If the owner of mobile equipment wants to set his own brightness parameters, then he should uncheck this box. In this case, a special slider is activated nearby, which can be moved to the right or left, thereby changing the parameter the person needs; Уменьшается яркость экрана Honor, Huawei что делать
  • Color temperature. To do this, click on the word “Colors”. An additional window is activated where you can see a circle in which the colors smoothly flow into one another. The user can move the mark in such a way as to select the most saturated version of a certain color scheme. That is, if you move the mark to the left, then everything on the screen will give off green tints, and if you move it to the right, it will look blue. And so on.

You can also simply select one of the three proposed modes: default, cold, warm.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wH0N2brgTA

That is, everything in this section is quite simple. Therefore, absolutely everyone can perform the necessary settings.

Engineering menu settings

The engineering menu opens up enormous possibilities for customizing the phone; we will consider the most interesting ones in detail.

  • SAR Test — determining the level of harmful radiation from a smartphone or tablet.
  • Connections — testing available wireless connection types: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, WLAN CTIA and FM receiver.
  • Camera—Adjust various camera settings.
  • Turning on the current camera — the operating current of the camera is displayed (in our tablet it is 2 mA).
  • Load test of the CPU (central processing unit) — checking the stability of its operation, identifying errors in the operation of the processor-memory channel, testing the cooling and power supply system of the processor.
  • Device Manager — activate automatic SMS registration, manage configuration parameters.
  • Disable detection — adjust the signal frequency.
  • Display — Sets the pulse width modulation meter cycle, which affects the perceived brightness of the screen by quickly turning the backlight on/off; backlight adjustment; controller behind the vertical and horizontal lines of the display.
  • Wake mode — activating it will not allow the device to “go” into sleep mode.
  • IO — control of data input/output operations.
  • Memory — detailed information about the RAM module.
  • To a degree — detailed information about the battery (the strange name of the section is most likely due to errors in the automatic translation of names in the application, but there is no option to switch to English).
  • SD card test — the name of the tab speaks for itself.
  • Touch screen — check the sensitivity and response of the display when pressed, as well as set its additional settings.
  • USB — testing the operation of the USB port.

When installing the application, some functions may not be available without root rights.

Tips for automatically reducing screen brightness, which does not suit the smartphone owner

One of the owners of Honor 20 described the following situation:

  • After purchasing a brand new mobile device, no settings were changed;
  • While watching a video on YouTube, a user noted that the screen brightness automatically decreases when the work takes place in dark areas.

Another situation faced by the owner of Huawei Mate 10:

  • On the contrary, he removed the automatic adjustment by unchecking the checkbox and moving the slider to eighty percent;
  • But when the main screen of the smartphone is activated, it turns out to be too strong;
  • When you run a program, such as an Internet browser, it is downgraded;
  • When returning back, it increases independently.

That is, in the first case there are automatic parameters, in the second — not. But the phones still seem to live their own lives.

A solution was proposed for the owner of Honor 20, which is to turn off the auto-tuning of this parameter. That is, the person was asked to go to “Settings”, click on “Screen” and then uncheck the box next to the word “Auto”. Well, set the slider to the desired position.

What’s the problem with the second user? The following assumption was made:

  • It is quite possible that in the background of the smartphone, applications that are energy-intensive are activated and are fully functioning. For example, some “heavy” games with good graphics;
  • The operation of such programs leads to an increase in the overall temperature of the mobile device, since the processor and other components operate in increased modes and heat up more;
  • Honor and Huawei mobile phones have a special built-in protection system. It analyzes the degree of heating of the device. And when certain values are reached, the screen brightness decreases — as one of the ways to optimize energy consumption;
  • As soon as the temperature values are returned to normal, the mobile phone begins to work in full mode. And the screen brightness increases to user-specified values.

In addition, there is another interesting feature of mobile phones from this manufacturer. They have another built-in system that, when launching various programs, for example, games, Internet browsers, slightly lowers the brightness settings, even if at that moment the auto-tuning is in a deactivated state.

This is done so that the smartphone owner can devote more time to running programs — after all, lowering the screen brightness provides some savings in battery power. And, again, nothing can be changed in this case — this technology is used.

Telephony

One of the main points that catches your eye when you first enter the engineering menu of the Android Huawei smartphone is the telephony menu. In this menu you will have access to many useful settings, including such important items as:

  1. Auto Answer
    . Here you will be able to enable or, conversely, disable auto answer to an incoming call.
  1. Band Mode
    . Here you can manually select frequencies for the GSM module. This menu will show you all the frequencies your phone supports. You can uncheck those bands that your mobile operator does not provide, which will ultimately save your battery power.
  2. CFU
    Setting
    . This option enables or disables conditional call forwarding.
  3. AT Command Tool
    . A utility for developers that supports AT commands.
  4. Modem Test
    . Fine-tuning compatibility with different types of devices.
  5. Network Selecting
    . Here you can also select mobile communication standards (GSM, WCDMA, LTE). For greater energy savings, turn off those not in use.
  6. NetworkInfo
    . A very convenient option for checking the quality of mobile operator services.
  7. GPRS
    . Setting up mobile internet connections. A choice of active SIM card is also available.
  8. HSPA Info
    . Information about the 3G network if this type of service is supported by your telecom operator.
  1. Mobile data service preferred
    . Using this item, you can increase the priority of the Internet over voice traffic. However, be careful, as incoming calls in this case may sometimes not reach you.
  2. Fast Dormancy
    . Allows you to save some of your phone’s energy on third generation networks.
  3. RAT Mode (Phone Info
    ). Using this menu you can select the most used communication standard. However, use with caution, as these settings block the action of the Network Selecting item.
  4. RF De-sense Test
    . Selecting a frequency range and a specific channel for testing communication quality.
  5. SIM ME Lock
    . Makes it possible to configure the regional parameters of the GSM module in manual mode.

The screen color is distorted or has a yellow, red, blue, green or whitish tint

If there is a third-party screen protector (or glass), remove it and check again. If the problem persists, follow these steps:

  1. Adjust the screen color temperature. Open Settings
    , find and open the section Color temperature
    or Color mode and temperature
    , then set the color temperature you are comfortable with.
  2. Check whether the function Eye protection is enabled
    . Open Settings
    , then find and open the section Eye protection
    .

    In mode Eye protection
    Blue light from the screen is reduced and colors become warmer. This reduces eye strain and protects vision. When this feature is enabled, the phone screen turns yellowish or reddish. Turn on or off the mode Eye protection
    according to your preferences.

  1. It is recommended to disable the mode Color correction
    in menu Settings
    . Mode Color Correction
    designed to make the phone easier to use for users with color vision impairment. After enabling this mode, one color shade will dominate the phone screen.
  2. Make sure that in the menu Settings
    function disabled Color inversion
    . (This feature is only available on devices running EMUI 9.0 and above.)
  3. If in the menu Settings
    function available Simulate anomaly
    , make sure it is disabled.

Notification curtain

This element has been completely redesigned in EMUI 5. Instead of two separate tabs for notifications and toggles, we see one. At the top there is a panel with switches and a screen brightness slider, which expands by swiping down to reveal additional buttons.

In addition, the design of the curtain has completely changed, it has become more “material”. We see contrasting blue buttons on a black background and white notification cards with the ability to perform quick actions. Expanded display and set of actions with notification are revealed by tap. Read notifications can be swiped away using side swipes.

Overall, I like the new curtain in EMUI 5, both in design and functionality. It has become less loaded than the old version and more ergonomic.

Reviews

If you carefully read the information above, it turns out that reducing the screen brightness on Honor and Huawei phones occurs automatically, even if this function is deactivated. This is how these phones are designed. Naturally, this does not always suit people. And we decided to read their reviews to understand exactly what solutions they find for themselves:

  1. Anton. I have Huawei Mediapad T1 8.0. I tried to figure out this problem on my own for several days. I’ve already changed all the settings. Turned auto-tuning on and off. All the same, when starting a particular program, a decrease in brightness is observed. As a result, I found a solution for my smartphone, perhaps it will help someone else. So, what is it? I initially got root rights for my mobile phone. Then I activated the browser, went to the Play Market and downloaded a special program from there. It’s called System app Remover. Installed and launched. This specialized software allowed me to access applications on my mobile phone that previously I simply could not delete. And thus I got rid of Power Genius (some may call it something else, for example, power genie, Hwpowergenie, and so on, in general, look for something like that). All! I didn’t have this problem anymore.

  2. Sergey. I solved it in approximately the same way. But a little differently. I also got rid of power genius. But the software described above did not help me. I put something else in its place. Namely, root explorer. After installation, I went to the system/app/ folder. And there I found the same application. I uninstalled it and restarted the mobile phone. I have, if anything, Honor 20.

  3. Oleg. I recently purchased a Huawei P20. And, like many others, I faced exactly this situation. Naturally, changing a car to a non-car doesn’t help at all. And independent actions of a mobile phone seriously stress me out. A friend advised me to look at it in developer mode. To enter it you need to type a certain combination on the keyboard. I took advantage of the offer. I went to this menu. I set the position for window animation to 1x. Now, in most applications, everything remains as I initially specified.
  4. Peter. My friend has Huawei p smart. And he complained too. I’ll meet him in a week. Well, I remembered his words. I decided to ask how I decided. It turns out that I actually found a way. He somehow, through a factory reset, completely disabled the developer mode. And, as his observations showed, this completely corrected the situation.
  5. Vladimir. I also heard about the developer mode, but have not encountered it before. It turned out that it contains a very useful tool. Just for my Huawei p10 I was looking for a solution to the problem with automatic brightness reduction. I went into this functionality. And I saw that my window animation was completely disabled. Activated. Everything is fixed!
  6. Vasily. I encountered the same problem after the last update of the shell of my Huawei P10 plus. Of course, I started looking for a way to eliminate it. I dug into the parameters. And I discovered an interesting tool there. It’s called «smart screen resolution». It, this very permission, was in an active state. Although auto-brightness has been removed. That is, one functionality easily replaced the second. Of course, I deactivated it and now I’m happy with the result.
