You shouldn’t expect unusual design solutions from a budget smartphone — here we are often talking about the maximum transfer to a lower segment of elements, if not flagship, then at least to some extent “premium” devices. Honor 10X Lite performs the minimum program: relatively small frames around the screen; the front camera is not in a cutout, but in a hole — in this case in the center; the back panel is made of plastic, but it is impossible to distinguish it from glass by eye; The edges of the back panel are beveled to make the smartphone more comfortable to hold.
Another important sign of 2020 is the scanner on the side power button. For some reason, all manufacturers at once decided to abandon the sensor on the rear panel, although the coverage area in this case is higher, and accidental clicks are practically eliminated, whereas when the sensor is located on the side key they are almost inevitable.
In this case, however, Honor 10X Lite avoids serious problems associated with unwanted unlocking of the smartphone in your pocket, which seriously plagued last year’s Honor 20, for example, or even the flagship Sony Xperia 1 II already this year. Yes, they happen, the scanner is very sensitive, but the scope of the problems is small.
But not all fashionable tricks are equally useful — the authors of Honor 10X Lite understand this and did not deprive it of a mini-jack. And in general, in terms of layout, minus that same side scanner, this is a completely traditional smartphone: a pair of hardware keys, a group of technological holes on the bottom edge, a card slot on the left.
Honor 10X Lite is available in three colors: Midnight Black, Emerald Green and Ultra Violet Sunset. The green and black bodies look traditional, and the “sunset” is made in a gradient style and shimmers from blue to lilac.
In terms of dimensions, Honor 10X Lite is more or less similar to its competitors (Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S/9 Pro, realme 6 Pro, Samsung Galaxy A21), maintaining a certain balance between the increased screen diagonal and at least some ease of use.
Except that it is a little thicker than the same Redmi — 9.3 mm versus 8.8 mm. But it is three grams lighter — 206 g versus 209. At the same time, there is clearly progress from year to year — having a larger screen and a more capacious battery than Honor 9X, Honor 10X Lite weighs the same and even manages to be narrower.
I have already partially written about user identification tools above. The side scanner, as usual, does not have enough coverage area, which is why you sometimes have to touch it two or three times before it works, but you can duplicate it with a quick face recognition system. True, it can only be considered reliable — only the front camera works without additional sensors.
Operating system — Android 10 with Magic UI 3.1 shell. The smartphone has not yet been transferred to the new Magic UI, or EMUI 11 — the new shell for Honor/Huawei smartphones is currently only available on the flagship Mate 40 Pro. There is also no talk about transferring to the open version of Android 11, but it will be very interesting to see how events develop — even if the sanctions that fell on Huawei are lifted from Honor, will this affect already released devices?
For now, everything is as usual — there are no Google services, you need to use the AppGallery brand store and the Petal Search aggregator of links to download apk files. Not very convenient, but an inevitable choice for any buyer of Huawei and Honor smartphones these days. The shell itself is modern and fast; there have been no questions about EMUI and Magic UI regarding user experience for a long time.

Honor 10X Lite received a screen with characteristics very familiar from Xiaomi’s mid-range hits (both Redmi Note 9S/9Pro and POCO X3 NFC): LCD with IPS matrix, 6.67-inch diagonal, Full HD resolution ( 2400 × 1080 pixels). The pixel density is not too high, but sufficient for the picture to be perceived normally — 395 ppi.
The viewing angles are wide, there is an effective oleophobic coating, and there is a “factory” film glued to the screen.
The measured maximum brightness level without software enhancement with auto-adjustment is 424 cd/m2 — a result below average for an LCD screen. The contrast is just average — 1289:1. Using a smartphone on a sunny day is not very comfortable, and you shouldn’t expect such a rich black color as on AMOLED matrices.
The screen settings are familiar from other devices running Magic UI 3.1, minus the Always-On Display mode, which is meaningless on a smartphone with an LCD display. There is a dark theme, you can adjust the font size and resolution. Color reproduction can be adjusted by choosing from two presets (vivid and normal), with the ability to adjust the color temperature to your taste. I measured color rendering with the Vivid and Normal presets at the default color temperature.
The Honor 10X Lite screen, unlike the Honor 30i screen, for example, does not pretend to have a wide color gamut — even in bright mode, the coverage is only slightly wider than the sRGB standard. At the same time, Huawei/Honor has been setting up its displays very carefully lately. Pay attention to the graphs — the curves of the gamma and color temperature are very even, they do not jump depending on the lightness of the shades.
In bright mode, however, the coverage is slightly shifted relative to the standard, the shades are still colder than they should be (7,500 K), but the gamma is ideal (2.20). The average DeltaE deviation for the extended Color Checker palette (shades of gray, a wide range of color shades) is 4.92 with a norm of 3.00.
In normal mode, everything returns to normal — the color gamut corresponds exactly to the sRGB standard, the color temperature even gets warmer excessively (about 6,000 K with a standard of 6,500 K), gamma is still normal (2.24). The average deviation DeltaE on the Color Checker scale is already within the acceptable limits — 2.95.
Honor 10X Lite has both a mini-jack and Bluetooth version 5.1 — but the aptX profile is not supported; LDAC should be supported, but precise information on this issue could not be obtained. The external speaker is monaural, of average volume and without much brilliance in terms of sound quality.

Honor 10X Lite received a block of four cameras, but, as is most often the case in the near-budget segment, you should not count on many available focal lengths in this regard. Two of the four cameras are responsible for different viewing angles, and two more are responsible for macro photography and assistance with software background blur.
The main camera has a 48-megapixel Quad Bayer sensor (physical dimensions — 1/2.0 inch) with an ƒ/1.8 aperture lens, phase detection autofocus and an equivalent focal length of 28 mm. The second camera is responsible for an expanded viewing angle — it is an 8-megapixel module with an ƒ/2.4 aperture lens, giving a coverage angle of 120 degrees. It lacks autofocus. This is the same pair that we saw on both last year’s Honor 9X and the recent Honor 30i.
The main camera gives some freedom when choosing lighting for shooting, producing a high-quality (both in terms of detail and dynamic range) picture outdoors on a cloudy day, in sunny weather, indoors, and even at night with street lighting .
In the dark, the quality of shooting naturally drops, but it is still possible to take a sharp shot. I note both good color rendition and well-set white balance. But the wide-angle module no longer shines with image quality — you can get decent shots only during the day or indoors in bright light.
Zoom is available only digitally — up to six times. Despite the presence of a camera with a Quad Bayer sensor, which allows for “tricky” cropping, the loss in quality is already noticeable at a two-fold zoom, not to mention a six-fold one. You can get a discernible image, but you can’t talk about quality.
In the dark, it’s no longer possible to get a high-quality picture with a wide-angle camera — it’s simply impossible to shoot without serious blur, the percentage of defects is too high. And when it does work out, the sharply decreasing detail attracts attention — the noise reduction is very active.
The proprietary night mode, which combines several images into one with increased clarity and expanded dynamic range, is available only for a standard viewing angle — and it works well: yes, contour sharpness is noticeably improved, but it cannot be said that this is definitely detrimental to the images . Sometimes, however, in an attempt to increase the brightness of a sky that is too dark, a smartphone can add quite a lot of noise.
The Honor 10X Lite camera can shoot with both the default resolution of 12 megapixels and 48 megapixels — this mode is manually selected.
There is also proprietary “artificial intelligence” — using machine learning technologies, the smartphone recognizes many scenes and adapts the picture taking this knowledge into account. As a rule, the same operations are performed — contrast and saturation are raised. This usually has a rather good effect on the result.
The third camera is responsible for macro photography. Due to the two-megapixel sensor, the pictures are of low resolution and weigh only half a megabyte, but in principle it is possible to take an interesting close-up for posting on social networks, the main thing is to do it in good lighting: the optics are not fast (ƒ/2.4), yes and the sensor is tiny.
The fourth camera is a depth sensor used in portrait mode, in which a single focal length is available, which encourages shooting full-length or half-length portraits: in them, spatial distortions are not noticeable. Close-ups come out so-so with this camera, although in our age of winning selfies, such stretched faces will no longer surprise anyone.
The camera application is usual for smartphones with EMUI: horizontal navigation, a set of familiar settings. A “professional” mode with manual settings is available, but without the ability to shoot in RAW.
In video shooting, the Honor 10X Lite is limited to Full HD resolution at up to 60 frames per second. There is no stabilization. In terms of video, inexpensive Honors are for some reason massively inferior to their competitors.
The front camera has an 8-megapixel sensor and ƒ/2.0 aperture optics. There is no autofocus or flash. The shooting quality is average (the dynamic range is weak, the camera is lukewarm in terms of color rendering, the angle is too wide), but there is a portrait mode and a beauty feature.
