In July 2022, HUAWEI updated HarmonyOS on Chinese versions of its smartphones, and today, October 20, the company announced the international version of the shell, but called EMUI 13. In addition to numerous performance improvements, in the current update, the company introduced two features that not previously seen on Android devices.
The most notable innovations relate to user interaction with the desktop and notes. Desktop icons now support quick expansion into small widgets. This will allow you to quickly get a summary of information without logging into applications.
EMUI 13 also expands the capabilities of your smartphone when working with wireless headphones and other devices. Now you can stream music to several Bluetooth headphones or speakers at once, as well as broadcast the image from the smartphone screen to HUAWEI laptops.
Other innovations relate to privacy features. For example, now the Security Center application will monitor the access of all programs to the user’s personal data, control permissions and stop suspicious application activity.
It is not yet known when and on which smartphones the global version of EMUI 13 will debut.
Huawei somewhat unexpectedly introduced the EMUI 13 firmware. It is intended for company phones sold outside of China — Chinese devices run HarmonyOS.
It is no coincidence that EMUI 13 was released after the announcement of HarmonyOS 3.0: many interface elements for the new version of the global firmware are borrowed from the Chinese one. But it hasn’t been without new features.
The SuperStorage function is designed to free up space in the flash memory. So, it can free up up to 20 GB by compressing the data of unused applications, finding and deleting duplicate files, deleting unclaimed files from downloads, etc.
The Audio projection feature allows you to broadcast the audio stream from one phone to two connected audio devices (for example, two pairs of headphones). The example refers to FreeBuds Pro 2, and it is not yet clear if this feature works with other headphones.
Security has been improved in EMIUI 13. For example, users can see how often installed applications use user data. The system can also scan applications for potential malware or warn about suspicious behavior of individual applications.
At the moment, Huawei has not yet revealed which phones will receive EMUI 13 and when. But usually flagships are included in the first update wave.

Among other things, the developers listened to users and implemented improved storage cleaning functions. The system will allow you to quickly compress rarely used applications and files, get rid of duplicates, and so on.
On the official website, Huawei talked about all the innovations in EMUI 13. The company did not announce on which devices and when the new firmware will be available.
