Medal of honor (2020): review
. She was very loved, and she was clearly associated with shooters about the Second World War. Then came Call of Duty
and showed that “Medalka” is much weaker than her. Then several years of competition and the unconditional victory of “Call of Duty”, secured by two control shots — Modern Warfare 1
— 2
.
Medal of Honor
, as they say on the Internet, “leaked.” In 2007, the weak Airborne was released
, which the creators of Call of Duty
They didn’t even take it seriously. As a result, Call of Duty began to compete with itself, and the bosses Activision
We were already thinking about building a new office out of gold and diamonds. But EA
All this time she was hatching a plan for revenge. She closely monitored the enemy, studied his battle tactics, and recruited experienced officers into her ranks ( DICE
), created a special operations unit ( Danger Close
) and a couple of weeks ago launched a decisive offensive, which was supposed to erase the phrase Modern Warfare from the memory of civilians
. You see the first letter “M” in the name — you think about Medal of Honor
!

Airplane cemetery. Have we seen it somewhere before?
Cinema again, now without the Germans
EA
She was confident in herself, she even chose the enemy’s battlefield. The topic of World War II is now closed even by the “Medal”. Now everything is happening in modern times. And if in Modern Warfare 2
shows a fictitious war, and an absolutely absurd one at that, then Medal of Honor
tells us about the Afghan reality.
A simple story about several units of fighters who fall into ambushes, rescue their comrades, fly in helicopters and exterminate the Taliban on an industrial scale so that after the final credits they can safely be recorded in the red book under the name “Bearded Terrorist”.
The plot is simple, like the desert landscapes of Afghanistan. Plot inserts before missions, in which we see a confrontation between the “rear rat” from Washington and a real colonel leading the brave fighters “from the inside,” are, at most, not annoying. In fact, they are tiring. Primitive skirmishes a la “Stop the rescue operation!” Don’t dare send a whole detachment to rescue just two!” with the answer “We don’t abandon our own, they stayed there to certain death! Two good guys surrounded by the Taliban!
But you can close your eyes to this. Or just turn off screensavers. B Modern Warfare 2
, I remember such videos weren’t very good either. Infinity Ward
It already benefited from the way the “local” story was presented, the way each new mission was presented to us. Remember, we swim underwater, and then we emerge and kill the enemy; we barely have time to dodge bullets piercing the windshield and the driver’s chest; running through the trenches with the burning White House in the background? Interactive inserts, when you feel like you are part of the action, scored a lot of points.
But for Medal of Honor
They didn’t even try to adopt it. There are simply no interactive videos here. If there is a screensaver, then we remove our hands from the mouse and keyboard. All you have to do is watch, but today this is already a minus. Here we are flying in a helicopter, our character turns his head, listens to what the instructor says, when suddenly the shelling begins. Everyone is fussing, someone is already dead, the hero is thrown from side to side, but all this is happening to someone else. The player is an observer. Although remember the first part
Call of Duty
, when we sail on boats to Stalingrad. Even then they were allowed to look around and crouch in order to dodge bullets. And here is a movie.

You won’t immediately believe that we are good guys-liberators…
For a hundred Taliban — a teddy bear
Already after the first levels you begin to guess that you shouldn’t expect anything innovative here. Fresh ideas? Excuse me, there are no such people. Out of five to six hours of play, we will spend only 40-60 minutes behind a stationary machine gun. It’s just some kind of curse — how long can you stuff us with this?
The rest of the time is a shooting gallery. We run forward together with three allies, who simply do not stop talking nonsense on the radio, and kill the Taliban crawling out from all corners. Moreover, sometimes they are reborn without hesitation right under our noses, emerge from dead ends, and find themselves behind our backs.
It seems like an expensive action movie, it’s clear that money was invested: a beautiful engine, not some kind of hack. But the gameplay is a boring attraction. Moreover, for the first two hours the developers almost mock us and feed us completely faceless, identical, gray, banal tasks. On the third mission, I fell into depression. He lay down on the sofa and didn’t move for about forty minutes.
Then, however, at least something fun appears. But even then — just a little and not for long. For example, our hero falls out of a helicopter and falls flat on the ground without a weapon and with a wounded leg. We have a knife in our hand, and we walk with a limp. It’s night outside, there’s snow, the Taliban in the area are looking for us. Start with a spark. Throw in some wood and the flame will flare up and you will want to move on. And we hobble forward, trying to contact our comrades on the radio, looking around — are there any enemies nearby? And then we notice one, you can crawl up to him from behind, another meter… The knife slides along the terrorist’s throat, we quietly lower him to the ground, take the machine gun and… recover. Have the broken bones healed, have the wounds healed? A few minutes later we are running along with the team and, with shouts and hooting, we clear the mountains of vile aborigines.
In the end, only one good find. The authors have created an interesting shelter system. If after running we press the “sit down” key, the character will jerk to the nearest stone, broken car, wall. Therefore, you can move quickly and confidently across the battlefield. We run, hide, shoot and regroup again.
But since the shootings themselves are monotonous, there are always a million enemies, and it’s boring to shoot even after two hours, this trump card cannot bring victory. There is, however, one more.

ATV racing. Have we seen this somewhere before?
The game is being developed, the beard is growing
Danger Close
contrasts its project with Modern Warfare 2
. There it’s a fictitious war, some kind of nonsense, but here everything is real, serious. The authors even grew beards. In honor of those who fought in Afghanistan.
And here is one of the moments when they try to touch us to the quick. We find ourselves surrounded by enemies, squeezed into a tiny house, mountains on all sides, enemies pouring in in an endless stream. On the radio, the detachment commander requests support, saying that there are too many opponents, we won’t last long. And indeed, the Taliban are visible and invisible. Having appeared on the horizon, they slowly move towards us, do not use cover and die from two or three hits. Terrorists are such idiots that when they come closer, they stand up to their full height and wait for us to shoot them. But there are really a lot of spiteful critics, more than we can kill, and gradually our shelter is falling apart. A hole in one wall, a roof falling in another, and enemies just as apathetically move forward, allowing you to mow them down in batches.
A soulful melody sounds in the background, the commander starts shouting into the radio that we don’t need help, there’s no chance. And it should touch you. Like, we are in a trap, a few more minutes — and certain death, we definitely won’t survive. But, damn it, in these ten minutes I have already shot a couple of hundred Taliban, I have now killed more than many soldiers of World War II during the entire period of the war, I am the hero of the planet! Fear that they will kill you now? Pf-f, I feel huge steel balls between my legs, because literally another fifteen seconds — and at least twenty Taliban will go to the next world. How are you going to scare me?
Developers Medal of Honor
They just couldn’t cope with what they themselves wanted to show. And it’s not even about this mission alone. It’s just that the whole game is hundreds, thousands of kills. Our character is a little god sent to Earth, a machine that grinds everyone who gets in the way. And even though we are in Afghanistan, even though this is a real war, but, in essence, it is just as fabulous as in Modern Warfare 2
. And the developers’ long beards don’t make her look serious.

Photo with a carpet.
Fight with your own kind
Another company was responsible for the network mode. EA
for multiplayer Medal of Honor
invited the creators of Bad Company 2
. And this, in fact, is visible. It feels like you’re playing an expansion pack for Battlefield
. But the addition is cheap, on which either the sons (unlikely) or pets (quite possible) of the developers worked.
Multiplayer is weird as hell. On the one hand, with external similarity to Bad Company 2
The only thing that comes from it is the engine and mechanics. The maps are much smaller, there is practically no equipment, the classes are arbitrary. So — no Battlefield
. Game closer to Modern Warfare 2
. Closer in dynamics, but in quality of execution Medal of Honor
insanely far from both parts Call of Duty
modern days.
There are classes, but what are they for? A stormtrooper runs around with machine guns and machine guns — and this is the only thing that distinguishes him from a specialist who runs around with submachine guns and shotguns. But both will have to play to try out all the weapons. However, no first aid kits, repairs, etc.
In the same Modern Warfare 2
There were no classes, but the character progression system was great. We received various skills, unlocked weapons and all sorts of additions to them. It’s interesting, exciting. B Medal of Honor
everything is stingy and mediocre.
And the modes are quite so-so. There is, for example, an assault, as in Bad Company 2
, but it takes place on tiny maps. You took three steps — you were already at the point, carelessly turned to the left, and you were already on the other side of it. The levels look bad, but are really beautiful and interestingly constructed — no more than two or three. Again, not comparable to what is in Modern Warfare 1
— 2
.
So the network mode is definitely not what we need. Moreover, an add-on for Bad Company 2 is coming out soon
and Black Ops
, which are guaranteed to be better than anything we see in Medal of Honor
.

For the sake of variety, we are allowed to shoot from a helicopter. However, they won’t let you fly.
***
The attempt to wipe my nose failed. However, as well as the desire to make a fascinating, interesting and instructive game about a war that ended just a few years ago. The feeling of Medal of Honor does not allow me to rate it “commendable”
. More and more I want to say: “Yes, this is garbage!” But in the assessment you see a “pass-through” — a very accurate definition for the project. We passed, didn’t really get any pleasure and began to wait for the next action movie. From other developers.
Pros:
a lot of money has been invested — you can feel it; beautiful picture, in particular mountain landscapes; a conventional cover system for a first-person action movie.
Cons:
total boredom; another shooting gallery; there is no interactivity in the videos; causes depression, from which only strong alcoholic drinks and corrupt women can pull you out, and they are not supplied with the game!

Not a year without special forces
Two years ago, Danger Close studio donated a second one
life of the Medal of Honor series, relaunching it in a modern setting, and
then this dish was to the taste only of those who were really tired of Call
of Duty. The second part, Medal of Honor: Warfighter, has started
further — it borrowed the Frostbite 2 graphics engine from Battlefield
3, left the cast of the characters from the year before last “Medal” and acquired a script
about the fight against Arab terrorism, which will be dragged through by a detachment of elite
special forces through Yemen, Dubai, Somalia, Pakistan and Sarajevo.
The connection with the previous Medal of Honor has not gone away:
our memorable Voodoo warriors, the Preacher and Mother never hung their rifles on the wall,
and the bearded operative Dusty, who lost his leg in the last part, became a military man
group consultant. However, towards the end this super soldier (the prototype for him
served as a famous bearded mercenary nicknamed Cowboy, he will still return to the battlefield and set the heat there.

► We remember the Voodoo operative for his familiar “bro” address. They say that before joining the special forces he was a Rastafarian. Judging by his unregulated appearance, it is difficult to say anything for sure.
The plot is inspired by real combat operations, but only one
the mission is based on actual events — the capture of the captain
ships by Somali pirates and the subsequent destruction of filibusters. In the rest
In some cases, the player will have to guess the nature of the source himself. So,
for example, clearing the headquarters of an arms baron and a mufti rolled into one is very
similar to a similar incident with Osama bin Laden, but the developers, of course,
they will never admit it.
Call of Duty took over not only the story of fighting
Muslim terrorism — the gameplay of Warfighter is like two peas in a pod
for the latest games in the series, only on the engine from Battlefield 3. Destructibility, however,
there is no trace, and externally the game is noticeably behind — Danger Close failed
wisely use the technology they inherited, and large-scale scenes are not
wondered. There are very few of them, and the production leaves much to be desired, so
the newfangled engine is, in fact, not used at all.

► The sentries in the Warfighter story campaign are not particularly sensitive. This one, for example, from the starting mission, guards an unnecessary area and will never turn around, even if you jump or do push-ups seventy times behind him!
Action films from Activision mixed pathos, absurdity and chases
almost in ideal proportions, and this forced the players not to look away
stare at the screen. But pathos is clearly in the magic formula of Medal of Honor: Warfighter
it was too much, the absurdity was not enough, and due to a glitch in the recipe, the production as a whole was not
wants to work correctly — local propaganda of almighty America
presented with a sour expression and without the slightest hint of imagination. Just melancholy
takes an advertisement for “Steel” cigarettes with the leader of nations on the cover; «cranberry» —
at least it’s fun.
Ridges of Madness

The Taliban, about whose inclusion in the game there was so much noise, are called Opposing Force in MoH multiplayer. The most ordinary masked terrorists, but you were afraid. |
If you buy Medal of Honor games (and military shooters in general) because of the multiplayer, then everything is higher and
The following does not apply to you. Feel free to take the new MoH — the multiplayer mode was made by EA DICE, it uses the Frostbite engine, there are eight professionally made ones
maps with destructible environments (not having anything to do with the single), and classes
characters and weapon customization are no different from Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Plus Afghan
color, Kabul, Kandahar, homemade explosive devices and action films
in dusty robes.
Now we’ll talk about the single —
the same one with the help of which the authors were going to resurrect the one that had died out in 2007
Medal of Honor franchise, modernize
series and make it a major competitor to Call of Duty again. About the single, which contains neither Kabul nor Kandahar, but has a lot
dark caves and snow-capped mountains.
Single player mode MoH created by elite Los Angeles
division of Electronic Arts (with the beautiful military name Danger Close). In interviews, the developers expressed a desire to fully use
features of an unusual setting (after all, before ArmA 2: Operation Arrowhead we did not have a single shooter, the action of which unfolded entirely
in Afghanistan) and show the real working methods of the SEALs and the unit
«Delta».
![]() |
There is no normal cover system in the game (although computer opponents successfully shoot blindly), but there is rudimentary peeking around corners. |
The scenery in the game is really unusual. Arcade military attractions like Call of Duty and Medal of Honor rely on frequent changes of entertainment
backdrops — sometimes a beach, sometimes a desert, sometimes snow, and so on right up to near-Earth orbit.
Single-player levels of the new MoH are larger
would suit a serious military simulator: mountain village, desert, mountains.
With each
When the opportunity arises, the developers make Hollywood contrivances (warehouses explode
with ammunition, transport helicopters fall, not a single mission is complete without artillery,
aviation or aerial bombardment), but the natural and climatic conditions of Afghanistan
— an extremely unprofitable setting for a blockbuster.
Remember the ending of Bad Company 2: it all culminated in a shootout after a parachute jump from an exploding
airplane. In Medal of Honor, the last three missions take place in the same snowy areas
mountains — they are dedicated to the misadventures of rangers and Navy SEALs who found themselves
cut off from their own and waiting in vain for helicopters from Kandahar.
This climax would have been fine in Operation Arrowhead, but it was still
military simulator, which is traditionally played with buttons fastened
and an extremely serious face. Medal of Honor seems to belong to a different category of games, so this ending
looks like a museum of aluminum chairs in the middle of Disneyland.

That is, according to
It’s at least ridiculous, and even downright offensive. Moreover, instead of Frostbite, the single uses a three-year-old Unreal Engine 3, which frankly cannot cope with processing the Afghan expanses
(therefore, the large-scale battle “Rangers vs. Taliban” takes place under the cover of dusty
storms).
