Entering download mode

It’s time to Google. You need to find the location of a special point on the motherboard – testpoint.

💡 If you are wondering why you need to do something with the unfortunate testpoint, then read the contents of the spoiler below.

To search, use the model name before the hyphen “testpoint”.
For example for Honor 9 Lite (LLD-L31) you should Google “lld testpoint”.

The marks may vary:

1. Only one point is marked in the photo.
2. In the photo, a line is drawn between the point and the metal shield.
3. In the photo, a line is drawn between two points.

Launch potatonv

and select “HUAWEI USB COM 1.0” in the device list (was already automatically chosen)Select bootloader – see table to help you make a choice. If the device is not in the table, then just try different bootloaders (this is safe).For my P8 Lite 2022 (PRA-LX1)

Make sure your device is compatible

0. Are you sure you’re actually using a Huawei/Honor device?
1. Open the Settings → About phone. Check the CPU: it should be HiSilicon Kirin ***. If it is not your case (MediaTek, Qualcomm), then alas, your device is not supported. 🙁
2. Okay, now you know CPU model. It should be one of these modification:
   • Kirin 620
   • Kirin 650
   • Kirin 658
   • Kirin 659
   • Kirin 925
   • Kirin 935
   • Kirin 950
   • Kirin 960
3. Don’t worry if CPU is not listed above – ask for a special bootloader for your device in the support chat if it’s older than 4 years (date of manufacture is 2022 or earlier).
4. 100% incompatible CPUs: Kirin 710, 710A, 710F, 810, 980, 985, 990 & newer.

Press the start button on potatonv.

PotatoNV shows:

If everything goes well, the phone will reboot and show the following text: “Your device has been unlocked, …” during boot, see first picture “PHONE Booting unlocked” at top.

Remove the cover from the device:

Heat the cover on the back of the phone with a hairdryer and carefully peel cover along the small gap using a plastic card or guitar pick

Short testpoint and iron shield (ground) on the motherboard

Solder a piece of flexible cable to a rigid cable, clamp some wires of the flexible cable to the external part of the UBS connector by connecting it to the phone.

You should use a multimeter or resistance meter to check if there is a conductive connection with the outside of the USB connector on the PC side, i.e. if your cable connection to ground is good,


Touch the test point with the other stiff end of the wire

Uninstall huawei usb com drivers

To be able to access the phone via USB (to copy files, run ADB etc.) you need to uninstall the HUAWEI USB COM drivers using “DriverUninstall.exe”.
Once the uninstall is finished it shows a strange “Restart” message box

If you press OK, your PC will restart (what is probably necessary to actually remove the driver).

Unlocking the bootloader

💡 All bootloaders are flashing to RAM, so an incorrect bootloader cannot harm the device.

Verify that everything worked out

first you need to enable USB-debugging in the development options of your device then type in command window:

❋ init

Turn off the device and unplug the USB cable
