What is undervolting

In order for a video card chip to work properly, it must be supplied with a current of a certain voltage. The manufacturer lays a small margin up and down, so with the help of special programs you can both increase and decrease the voltage.

Raise it to increase the power of the video card. And if you lower the voltage, you can achieve the same performance and significantly reduce power consumption and heating. As a result, the video card will work as before, but it will make less noise and heat up. This is undervolting.

Unlike overvoltage, which can cause overheating and damage the device, undervoltage does not harm the graphics card. The maximum that can happen is that a decrease in performance will lead to less stable operation of games and programs. But all these problems can be solved by returning the voltage to its previous levels.

Okay so I’ve been reading that undervolting the 30 series cards, particularly the Ti cards is pretty much a ‘must do’ to improve the efficiency and temperature of the GPU without affecting performance too much, in some cases not at all.

I haven’t been having any issues with temps or stability using stock settings but I thought I’d see how I went with undervolting.

Here is a typical Heaven result at stock settings.

Avg FPS = 107.6

Max fan % — 46%

Heaven was run at 1440p, windowed with all settings maxed, DX11. Afterburner and HW Info were also running

Lower the voltage gradually: changes are reflected differently on video cards, so it is impossible to derive a universal indicator. For the first step, you can lower the voltage by 50 millivolts, then — 1% per step.

For example, the Radeon RX 560 has a default voltage of 1043 millivolts. For the first step, it is worth subtracting 50 millivolts — the new value will be 993. Then — 1% per step: subtract 9.93 from 993, 9.83 from 983 and beyond. Values ​​can be rounded for ease of calculation.

When it can help

Undervolting is worth considering if your video card constantly heats up above 80 degrees under load, and its fans are noisy all the time. This can happen for many reasons, including when the computer gets dirty with dust or when the cooling system fails. Therefore, before undervolting, check the following:

If the heatsinks are clean and there are enough fans, but the video card still overheats, undervolting can be a lifesaver and significantly lower operating temperatures — by 5-10 degrees, sometimes more.

How to prepare for undervolting

Check the baseline of the graphics card first with stress tests. For example, run the program — it is well suited for checking the video card for noise and heating. Install it and run one of the four test presets, depending on what resolution your monitor has.

The main task of undervolting is to reduce the temperature of the video card as much as possible, but not to lose performance. Memorize the resulting numbers and proceed.

How to lower the voltage of the video card

Check computer cooling. Verify that the chassis fans are working properly. There should be at least two for blowing in and one for blowing out.

Clean the heatsinks of the video card. If they are clogged with dust, this may increase the temperature of the component.

Do preliminary tests. Record graphics card heat and performance metrics with graphics card stress tests. For this, the FurMark program is suitable.

Change the voltage on the graphics core. You can use MSI Afterburner for this. Reduce the indicators gradually until you achieve the desired result.

To do this, repeat the stress test of the video card and compare the reports before and after. The ideal result is if the temperature has decreased, but the performance has not decreased.
